iiNet and Internode have both added 4G backup as an optional feature to their NBN plans, allowing customers to stay connected in the event their primary connection carks it.
In both cases, 4G backup relies on a modem offered by the pair of providers at sign-up, simply referred to as the "High-Speed NBN Modem with 4G Connection Backup". If your NBN drops out, the modem will swap you over to the Vodafone 4G network.
Download speeds are limited to 12Mbps, however, and you'll only get 1Mbps of upload. This makes it equivalent to an NBN 12 connection. For comparison, Telstra and Optus both offer 4G backup download speeds of 25Mbps.
Adding on the modem to your iiNet or Internode plan won't cost you anything extra upfront, other than $10 in delivery fees. Instead, you'll be hit with a prorated modem fee if you leave within your first 24 months. This is equivalent to $8 for each month left in your two-year term.
If you're not interested in 4G backup, you can still bring your own modem to iiNet and Internode.

At present, the modem with 4G backup is only available to customers new to iiNet or Internode, but the telcos are also hoping to offer it to existing customers down the line according to a spokesperson from parent company TPG.
"We are eager to get these modems to as many customers that want it, but with global supply issues impacting stock levels, we are focusing on new customers for now," said the spokesperson. "We will look to expand the availability of these modems to existing customers in the near future."
Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone all also offer 4G backup on their NBN plans.
