Google Home devices are about to get a whole lot smarter thanks to an interpreter mode that can translate conversations in (almost) real-time.
Commands like "Hey Google, help me speak Polish" will fire up the interpreter. If you're using a Google Home Hub, the screen will instantly translate your words as you speak, and then read out the complete sentence or phrase in your chosen language when you're done talking. Afterwards, the second person will be able to speak in their own language. However, two people aren't able to speak at the same time.
If you're using a Google Home device without a screen, you'll only get the spoken output.
Interpreter mode is initially being piloted on Google Home Hub devices at hotel concierge desks in the US. It will roll out to other Google Home devices and third-party smart displays over the coming weeks.
Google Assistant's interpreter mode will support 27 languages at launch, including Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Swedish, and Thai.
