Telstra has expanded its 5G home internet plan range with two new, cheaper options with capped speeds. The telco has added a $70 per month plan with speeds limited to 25Mbps and a $80 per month plan with speeds limited to 50Mbps.
These join its existing uncapped "Premium" plan, which is billed at $85 per month with typical evening speeds of 300Mbps. While peak hour performance is lower, Telstra says customers can expect speeds close to 600Mbps on this plan.
Here is Telstra's full range of 5G home internet plans:
Like Telstra's older plan, the two new plans also have a 1TB download allowance. When customers go over this, their speeds are capped to just 1.5Mbps. On a desktop computer, that will be too slow for anything beyond basic browsing and music streaming. For comparison, the more expensive Premium plan has a much more reasonable 25Mbps speed cap after the 1TB allowance has been exceeded.
Telstra's two new plans also have a unique condition worth noting: Telstra says that customers on these plans may not be able to upgrade to a faster 5G home internet plan down the line. A Telstra spokesperson told WhistleOut this is due to there being a fixed amount of capacity in each area.
"The disclaimer is there to be upfront that if a customer moves to a lower‑speed plan and later wants to upgrade, additional network capacity needs to be available at their address at that time," said the spokesperson. "In some areas, this may not be possible due to increased demand on the mobile network."
Telstra's 5G home internet plans all come with the company's Smart Modem 4. Customers get to keep the modem if they stay for 24 months or longer, but can return it or pay a $200 non-return fee if they leave early.
While Telstra's top-end 5G home internet plan is great value compared to the competition, the same can't be said for its newer offerings. 50Mbps 5G home internet plans start at around $60 per month from providers like TPG and iiNet when you exclude discounts, so $70 per month for 25Mbps isn't exactly a great deal. Telstra's 5G footprint is, however, the largest in Australia, meaning its 5G internet plans are available to a wider audience.
When it comes to Telstra's more expensive plans, for most, it will make more sense to opt for Telstra's $85 per month uncapped plan instead of the $80 per month 50Mbps plan.
