The latest monthly Netflix ISP Speed Index report has been released, with TPG, iiNet and Optus closely tied for the top spot, while Telstra continued to lag behind.
The report, which Netflix updates each month, has been tracking the average connection speeds by Aussie ISPs since the streaming TV service launched in April.
TPG and iiNet have battled for top spot since the beginning of the reporting period, while Optus maintains it place as a close third. All ISPs appear to offer average speeds of between 3.2- and 3.4Mbps.
This result is all the more impressive when you consider that iiNet and Optus both offer Netflix streaming without counting the download data against customer allowances. This may encourage these customers to use the service even more than customers subscribed to the competition.
Dodo is one of the most improved in the latest index, and is now tied with Exetel for fourth. Just two months ago Dodo was offering customers an average connection of 2.4Mbps, but now this figure has increased to 2.9Mbps.
The biggest surprise comes from Australia’s largest broadband supplier. Telstra has been in last place for each report so far, but appears to be slowing further. Currently BigPond customers enjoy speeds just over 2Mbps, down from 2.3Mbps in May.

To calculate these results, Netflix analyses the average bitrate for each ISP during three-hours of peak activity each day. Speed is counted across all available devices, though Netflix concedes that this excludes "a small number of plans, devices for which we cannot record accurate bitrates and streaming over identified mobile networks."
