Over 2.4 million Australians are now on NBN plans faster than 100Mbps

Adoption of NBN plans with speeds faster than 100Mbps has skyrocketed, according to the latest NBN Wholesale Market Indicators Report published by the ACCC. Over 2.4 million Australian households are on a plan faster than 100Mbps as of September, up from just under 700,000 in the previous reporting period of June.

NBN Co's September speed upgrades would largely be responsible for the increase, with the majority of internet providers upgrading eligible customers on NBN 100 plans to the newly introduced NBN 500 speed tier automatically, at no extra cost.

This is reflected in the data, which shows the number of households on NBN 100 plans dropping from 2.1 million in June to around 786,000 in September. In addition, the total number of NBN 50 connections decreased by around 300,000, suggesting that a number of those households may have upgraded to NBN 500. NBN 50 is still the most popular speed tier, however.

The ACCC's "plans with speeds faster than 100Mbps" category encompasses NBN 250, NBN 500, NBN 750, NBN 1000, and NBN 2000 plans. Of the 2.4 million plans, over 1.6 million are on NBN 500. Around 330,000 and 370,000 are on NBN 750 and NBN 1000 plans, respectively. Just over 2,000 households had taken up NBN 2000 plans by the end of September.
