After almost two years of limbo, Sonos today confirmed that Google Assistant will be available on its smart speakers from next week. Google Assistant will initially be available on the Sonos One and Sonos Beam in the United States, but we're sure enterprising local Sonos won't have too much trouble in finding a workaround (we had Alexa working on our Sonos One before it was officially available here).
Sonos CEO Patrick Spence announced the news in a letter to investors, saying the company is "thrilled to be rolling it out next week."
"Through a software upgrade, Sonos One and Beam will support the Google Assistant in the US, with more markets to come over the next few months," said Spence. "This feature will truly elevate the customer experience and marks the first time that consumers will be able to buy a single smart speaker and get to choose which voice assistant they want to use."
While Sonos have long promised that the Sonos One would be the first smart speaker to both Google's and Alexa's voice assistants, today's news brings that a smidgen away from being a reality.
