Fixed Wireless NBN tower

Users on Fixed Wireless Plus NBN plans may now see download speeds as fast as 100Mbps, with NBN Co deploying the capability to the entirety of its Fixed Wireless network.

The faster speeds may not be available to every single Fixed Wireless customer just yet, but NBN Co CTO for Wireless Networks, Jason Ashton, says many NBN providers have started enabling these speeds.

"Following the success of our national trial earlier this year, many retail service providers have made the necessary changes within the last week so that their Fixed Wireless Plus customers should not need to do anything to experience the benefits of these higher speeds," said Ashton.

In the trials earlier this year, NBN Co found that typical evening speeds lifted from between 60Mbps and 70Mbps, to between 80Mbps and 90Mbps. Speeds during less busy parts of the day even exceeded 100Mbps. In addition, upload speeds have been bumped to a maximum of 20Mbps, putting Fixed Wireless Plus in line with NBN 100 plans.

While most Fixed Wireless Plus customers shouldn't need to do anything to get the fastest speeds (after their provider switches them on), some customers with older Wireless Network Terminating Devices (WNTD) - the antenna that connects to the Fixed Wireless network - will need a hardware upgrade.

Customers with a WNTD 2 - a diamond-shaped antenna - will need an upgrade to the latest model. This will be provided to customers automatically if they order a high-speed Fixed Wireless plan.

Tangerine and More have both explicitly started advertising their Fixed Wireless Plus NBN plans with the new maximum speed guidance, but most other providers still have the old maximum speed of 75Mbps listed on their website. This doesn't necessarily mean that existing customers aren't experiencing faster performance.

For example, WhistleOut understands that Fixed Wireless Plus customers on Aussie Broadband can now achieve speeds of 100Mbps, despite the fact its website hasn't been updated yet.

Faster Fixed Wireless Plus plans are the first step in Fixed Wireless upgrades promised for the middle of this year. The next will see two faster Fixed Wireless speed tiers launch: a 200Mbps option, and a 400Mbps option. The 200Mbp plan will be available to 90% of the Fixed Wireless footprint, and the 400Mbps option to 80%
