Aussie Broadband has started selling WiFi 7 routers ahead of the September NBN speed upgrades, and is undercutting Amazon on eero Pro 7 models in a pretty significant way.
While Amazon normally charges $529.99 for an eero Pro 7 or $1,199.99 for a three-pack, Aussie Broadband is offering a single model for $240, a two-pack for $480, or a three-pack for $720. Customers do need to pay shipping, however, but it still works out to be a solid discount.
The catch is that one needs to be an Aussie Broadband customer to purchase an eero Pro 7 through the NBN provider. New customers can add one to an NBN plan when signing up, while existing customers can buy one through the Aussie website.
Aussie Broadband is also ranging the cheaper eero 7, but the discount is smaller. While Amazon charges $299.99 for a single unit, Aussie Broadband is charging $180.
The standard eero 7 is a dual-band router that can handle internet connections up to 2.5Gbps, and can offer WiFi speeds as fast as 1.8Gbps. The eero Pro 7 is tri-band, has support for internet connections as fast as 5Gbps, and doubles WiFi speeds to 3.6Gbps.
Internet that fast simply isn't a reality for most in Australia right now, but NBN Co is launching 2Gbps plans in September this year. These will be available to those who have FTTP or HFC at home.
In our review, we said the "eero Pro 7 is a great WiFi mesh system if you’re looking to futureproof your home network".
"You can feasibly get by with a single, appropriately priced unit or blanket a larger home with a three-pack. Everything’s easy to set up and expand."
Ahead of the NBN speed upgrades, old networking hardware has been pointed to as a potential bottleneck that prevents users from getting the impending faster speeds. WiFi 5 should be fast enough for 1Gbps speeds, but a WiFi 6 modem is a more future-proof buy. Customers who want an NBN 2000 plan will likely need a WiFi 7 modem. Anyone looking to upgrade should consider WiFi 6 at a minimum.
An Aussie Broadband spokesperson told WhistleOut that its budget brand Buddy will not be ranging eero 7 models. It currently has eero 6 options available.
