Faster internet speeds continue to grow in popularity, with NBN Co revealing that 47% of Australians are now on an NBN 100 plan or faster. This is up from 32% in the 2025 financial year.
NBN Co also revealed that 37% of Australians are now on an NBN 500 plan or faster, which is up from just 4% in the 2025 financial year. NBN 500, which was introduced in September last year, is now the single most popular NBN speed tier. Before September last year, NBN 1000 plans were the option for a plan with download speeds faster than 500Mbps.
NBN 500 plans are only available to those with FTTP or HFC connections, but in most cases, they are priced in line with NBN 100 plans. The vast majority of NBN 100 customers on FTTP and HFC connections were upgraded to NBN 500 at no extra cost last year.
Since NBN 500 plan pricing tends to mirror NBN 100 plans, there tends to be only a small cost difference between them and NBN 50 plans. Some providers, like Telstra, charge the same price for NBN 50 and NBN 500, despite the ten times difference in speed.
Here are the most popular NBN 500 plans:
In addition to demand for more speed, NBN Co saw a 13% increase in data usage. The average premises now uses 574GB per month. FTTP households use even more data, averaging 687GB per month.
Lastly, NBN Co noted that over 1.38 million homes have taken advantage of its free FTTP upgrades. CEO Ellie Sweeney says there are now more customers connected to the NBN via fibre than copper for the first time in the network's history.
"Fibre is the superior broadband technology and the foundation for Australia’s digital future," said Sweeney. "It’s more reliable, more resilient and scalable, while delivering lower latency, stronger performance and the ability to serve the nation for decades to come."
The network builder says it is on track to provide an upgrade pathway for the remainder of the FTTN footprint by 2030. Out of the final 622,000 premises, around 90,000 are already able to make an upgrade.
