Can I switch to Telstra NBN from my current internet provider, and will there be any additional costs or downtime during the transition?

Yes, you can always switch internet providers . However, there is always a right time to do it. If you're locked into a contract, waiting until that finishes will ensure you don't have to pay any early termination fees. You will also need to make sure you either pay off or return any additional hardware.

Q: Can I bring my own modem to use with a Telstra NBN plan?

Yes, however, it is strongly recommended by Telstra to use its smart modem which is included with all its Upfront NBN plans.

Telstra NBN plans compared

Telstra offers two types of NBN plans: "Upfront" and "internet-only". The main difference is Upfront plans come with a modem and 4G backup, while internet-only plans don't, and as such, are a little cheaper. While Telstra will sell customers on internet-only plans a modem as an optional extra, it won't have 4G backup.

Telstra's Upfront plans also come with a home phone landline at no extra cost, with unlimited calls to standard Australian mobiles and landlines. Internet-only plans don't include this.

Here's how these plans compare:

NBN 50

Telstra's NBN 50 plans are next. As with NBN 25, Telstra's plan tends to be on the more expensive side. From July 1, Telstra's NBN 50 plans will be priced the same as its NBN 100 and NBN 500 plans. As such, there's almost no reason to consider a Telstra NBN 50 plan.

Telstra NBN plan modem

All of Telstra's Upfront NBN plans include its Smart Modem 4 with 4G and 5G backup. This provides a mobile internet connection in the event of an outage, but download speeds are limited to 25Mbps.

Telstra NBN customers who get the Smart Modem 4 bundled with their NBN plan can use Telstra Internet Optimiser. Telstra Internet Optimiser enables features including network monitoring, device blocking, assigning priority activities, and filtering out gaming servers that are too far away from home.

The Telstra Smart Modem 4’s range can be extended with a Telstra Smart Wi-Fi Booster 3. A Smart Wi-Fi Booster 3 costs $168 outright, but can be paid off on a 12-month or 24-month instalment plan. Telstra says one booster is ideal for a small-to-medium home, two for a bigger house, and three for a large or multi-story house.

Telstra NBN plan extras

While Telstra's NBN plans are a bit pricier than the competition, they include access to the Telstra Plus perks program. Customers earn 10 points for every dollar spent with Telstra, and these can then be put towards items in Telstra's reward store or towards a discount on bills.

All Telstra Plus members can also get discounted movie tickets, discounted sports tickets, and pre-sale ticket access for concerts and other major events.

Telstra NBN plan entertainment bundles

Telstra has a whole host of entertainment options you can bundle onto your monthly bill, ranging from streaming to gaming. Paying these bills through Telstra lets you earn Telstra Plus points.

These include:

Kayo Sports. Get a Kayo Sports subscription from $29.99 per month. There's no discount, but you can get a longer 14-day trial and earn Telstra Plus points.
Disney Plus. You won't get any discount on the Disney Plus Standard or Premium subscriptions but you will earn Telstra Plus points.
Fetch TV. Telstra sells Fetch TV set-top boxes. Get the Fetch Mini for $8.25 per month on a 24-month term or the Fetch Mighty for $16.50 per month on a 24-month term. They can also be purchased outright for $198 or $396, respectively. You only earn Telstra Plus points on the purchase if paying over 24 months.
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Eligible Telstra customers can get a Game Pass Ultimate for $25.95 per month.
Spotify. Telstra customers can add Spotify Premium to their bill for $15.99 per month.

In most cases, the main benefit of adding any of these subscriptions to your Telstra account is that you'll pay for everything in one bill, and you'll earn Telstra Plus points for each dollar spent. Telstra isn't offering any of these subscriptions at a discount.

Telstra NBN plan FAQs

Can I bring my own modem to use with a Telstra NBN plan?

You can use your own modem with a Telstra NBN plan, but you'll miss out on features like 4G backup if you do so.

Does Telstra offer NBN plans for pensioners?

Telstra has a single NBN plan available for those with a concession card or health care card, but it isn't very good value. The best NBN plans for seniors tend to be cheaper plans from other providers.
