The technology behind Satellite NBN provides many Australians with hope for a decent internet connection. While it does limit the providers and inclusions of the plans you can choose from, there are still plenty of great options available if you know where to look. Here are our latest picks of the best satellite internet providers currently in the Australian market and their plans.
Presented by: Anula Wiwatowska - WhistleOut telco expert:
NBN is copying Starlink.
No wait, it is a good thing.
Later this year NBN Co is going to launch low earth orbit satellites which will eventually take over the current Sky Muster satellite NBN.
This is the same tech Starlink uses, but these ones will be powered by Amazon instead. So you know, pick your billionaire.
Still, these will have lower latency and faster speeds than the traditional satellites NBN has been using so far. Which is a win for rural Australians.

Best NBN satellite plan with basic speed (NBN 25)
A satellite NBN plan with basic speeds of up to 25Mbps comes with many of the same pros and cons as its fixed-line counterpart. This type of plan is better suited to a one or two-person household and you may run into issues if multiple people are using your connection at once.

Best NBN satellite plan with fast speed (NBN 100)
If you want a satellite NBN plan with faster speeds, this is currently the best you can get. A satellite internet plan with NBN 100 speeds is a good choice for larger households. You should be able to download larger files or games at a faster clip and even stream multiple shows at the same time without issue.

Best satellite NBN alternatives: Starlink
In Australia, if satellite internet is your only option and you aren't happy with Sky Muster NBN the next best alternative is Starlink.
Starlink operates a satellite service and sells plans via Elon Musk's company, SpaceX. Its network, comprised of thousands of small satellite units situated in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), can deliver internet speeds beyond 100Mbps, with Starlink quoting download speeds of up to 400Mbps. Its plans are pricier, however, starting from $75 per month.
Whereas Satellite NBN is only available to customers who can't get other NBN technologies, Starlink plans can be purchased by anyone around Australia. Residential plans are for fixed locations, while Roam plans are for in-motion use. Local and Global plans are also for fixed and in-motion use, respectively, but come at a higher price point with faster priority speeds.
How we choose the best satellite NBN plans
To find the best satellite internet plans and providers, we start with a few basic plan criteria.
Data
Most of the NBN satellite plans in the market now come with unmetered data which means you will benefit from uncapped data usage for all types of traffic and all times of the day.
Occasionally, you might come across some plans that come with capped peak and off-peak data. Note that peak data usage hours are between 7am to 1am.
Speeds
Most of the unlimited data NBN satellite plans in WhistleOut's database come in one of three speed tiers: NBN 25, NBN 50 and NBN 100.
You'll want to choose your speed based on your internet usage needs and the size of your household.
Other factors
Price and plan inclusions are major considerations in choosing which of these plans we recommend, but they aren't the only factors we review.
We also look at the customer service options offered by each company, favourable contract terms and conditions, and any perks and bonuses included as well.
Satellite NBN plan upgrades explained
Later this year, NBN Co. is planning to launch a new type of satellite internet plan powered by a similar technology to Starlink. Powered by Amazon LEO, these new plans promise to offer lower latency and internet speeds of either 50Mbps or 100Mbps. They will also launch with by an introductory offer designed to shift existing Sky Muster customers over to the new service.
Those who upgrade to these new satellite internet plans within the first 90 days can expect free hardware and installation as well as a discounted wholesale price, which should translate into a cheaper retail one as well.
NBN Co plans to move all existing Sky Muster customers over to the new service by the end of 2027, with the satellites slated to be decommissioned at the end of 2028.

Installation times vary depending on your location but NBN attempts to get most Satellite customers online usually within 20 business days. Are there other types of satellite internet?
Another form of satellite internet is set to come online for Aussies in late-2026. Currently known as Amazon Leo (formerly known as Project Kuiper), this service is a collaboration between NBN Co and Amazon that promises to bring faster download speeds of up to 100Mbps and lower latency to remote Australians.
WhistleOut is Australia's telco comparison website, founded to help everyday Aussies find a phone and internet plan that's right for them. As part of our service promise, we're committed to listing plans from at least the top ten providers of internet plans in the market, but we're currently tracking 34. When we have a commercial relationship with a provider, you'll see a "Go To Site" button that takes you straight to that plan.
We still compare plans from providers we don't have a commercial relationship with, but these don't have a button. To keep our listings up to date, we have a dedicated product team that makes around 400 changes to our database each month.
When putting together our monthly Editor's Picks, we consider plans from all providers we compare on site, regardless of whether we have a commercial relationship with them. WhistleOut's commercial relationships don't influence our picks for the best prepaid plans.
When a plan wins the golden Editor's Pick ribbon, it means that as well as being the best plan for this month, the provider has gone into the running for our WhistleOut Awards, judged annually.
Our Editor's Picks are selected by our team of data experts. We may earn a commission if you click on one of the products listed, but a service provider isn't required to have a commercial relationship with us to be eligible for consideration. See here for more information about how we work.
