How much data do I need?
While not everyone has the same data needs, we recommend plans with at least 15GB per month. This is greater than what the average Australian on a prepaid plan uses, meaning it should be enough data to get through a month without counting megabytes.
For big-data lovers, it’s double the data (30GB). Then, for heavy users, we suggest a minimum of 50GB. Some plans boast at least double this data, however.
While two plans might have the same price, you might be paying more for your data with one provider compared to another. You can use the value per GB calculator below to assist you with your comparisons.
When plans have similar inclusions, the cheapest option isn’t always the best. One way to compare is on the value per GB. As a rule of thumb, anything at $1 or under per GB is good value.
How we choose the best mobile phone plans each month
WhistleOut's Editor's Picks awards are selected by our team of data experts who read over a thousand phone documents each week and spot hundreds of changes each month. Our experts consider factors including pricing over 12 months, data allowance, and extra perks like bundling discounts, international calling, and roaming options.
When it comes to the best SIM-only plans, we consider both postpaid and prepaid plans, and are looking for plans that are contract-free and have unlimited talk and text. We have two picks: one for plans with at least 15GB, and one for plans with at least 30GB.
15GB is great for everyday use. It's enough for 60 hours of streaming Netflix on the go, or 115 hours of music streaming. Going to 30GB doubles this. A 30GB plan is enough for 120 hours of Netflix on the go, or 230 hours of music streaming.
Price is a key factor, and we judge plans on their first-year value. This is because many mobile plans have a discount that lasts for the first six months, after which they become more expensive. This helps separate actual great pricing from a limited-time promotion that may not offer better value in the long run.
We'll also consider perks like bundling options, international calls, and international roaming.
Monthly cost is the main consideration when picking the best phone plans for iPhone 18, Galaxy S26, and Pixel 11. That's why we default to 36-month plans. They're cheaper, even if it means paying off your phone over a longer period. We also only consider plans with at least 30GB of data. As with SIM-only plans, we also look at perks and extra features in determining the best.
When it comes to picking the best phone plans for kids, we ensure that the plans are prepaid, contract-free, and have unlimited talk and text.

“There's no point in paying for more data than you're using. While there are plenty of mobile plans that offer 100GB or more, don't be tempted by big numbers. According to the ACCC, the average Aussie on a postpaid mobile plan only uses around 20GB each month. If your usage is similar, paying for more data is just wasting money.
When you're looking for a new mobile plan, work out your current usage, maybe add on a few extra gigabytes so you have a comfortable buffer, and find a plan that matches that.”

Mobile phone plans FAQ
Is prepaid or postpaid better?
There's very little difference between postpaid and prepaid, other than when you pay your bill. On postpaid, you'll get a bill at the end of each month and typically have two weeks to pay it. On prepaid, you'll pay upfront ahead of your month.
Can I keep my number when changing phone plans?
You can always keep your phone number when changing mobile plans. Your right to your phone number is protected by law.
Which provider has the best mobile coverage?
Telstra has the best mobile coverage in Australia, with a network size of 2.14 million square kilometres. Telstra's wholesale network is next, with a network size of 1.4 million square kilometres. This is followed by the Optus and Vodafone networks, which both cover 1.2 million square kilometres.
Which providers use the Telstra network?
Boost Mobile, Belong, ALDI Mobile, Everyday Mobile (previously Woolworths Mobile), Superloop, Exetel, Tangerine, and More all use the Telstra network for their mobile plans.
When a plan wins the golden Editor's Pick ribbon, it means that as well as being the best plan for this month, the provider has gone into the running for our WhistleOut Awards, judged annually.
Our Editor's Picks are selected by our team of data experts. We may earn a commission if you click on one of the products listed, but a service provider isn't required to have a commercial relationship with us to be eligible for consideration. See here for more information about how we work.
WhistleOut is Australia's telco comparison website, founded to help everyday Aussies find a phone and internet plan that's right for them. As part of our service promise, we're committed to listing plans from at least the top ten providers of mobile plans in the market, but we're currently tracking 31. When we have a commercial relationship with a provider, you'll see a "Go To Site" button that takes you straight to that plan.
WhistleOut still compares plans from providers we don't have a commercial relationship with, but these don't have a button. To keep our listings up to date, we have a dedicated product team that makes around 400 changes to our database each month.
When putting together our monthly Editor's Picks, we consider plans from all providers we compare on site, regardless of whether we have a commercial relationship with them. WhistleOut's commercial relationships don't influence our picks for the best mobile plans.
