Sony has announced its new mid-range device – the Xperia M2, alongside its Z2 flagship. The M2 is not water-proof like its more-expensive sibling, which is a shame. We would have liked to see a mid-range waterproof phone, but it’s possible that Sony wants to keep that for its premium devices for a while longer.

Under the hood

The M2 sports a large 4.8 inch qHD (540 x 960) display with 229 pixels per inch (ppi). Despite Sony's proud claims that this is the 'biggest qHD display in its class', it's a very standard offering with about 100ppi less than an iPhone's Retina Display.

To be fair 4.8 inches is admittedly pretty big for a mid-range phone, but isn’t that much larger than the LG G2 mini, which has the same resolution over 4.7 inches.

The M2 sports a quad-core 1.2GHz snapdragon 400 CPU, 1GB of RAM, an 8MP camera and a relatively thin profile of just 8.6mm. The battery is a pretty standard 2300mAh option which should run the phone for a full day with no issues, but don’t expect anything special out of it.

There is also a dual-SIM variant called the Sony Xperia M2 Dual, which will be handy for some users.

Should we be excited?

If the Xperia M2 ends up being similarly-priced to Motorola’s incredibly affordable Moto G then we’ll be very happy. Another mid-range handset for budget prices is always great for customers.

More likely is that the M2 will end up being priced squarely alongside other mid-range handsets, in which case we'd not feel strongly either way about it. It certainly sounds like a decent middle-class smartphone, but without much to differentiate it from the competition.
