Boost Mobile Plans Review: The Verdict
Boost Mobile isn’t the cheapest prepaid telco out there, but its plans do have great coverage care of the Telstra wholesale network, plus international inclusions.
What we love
- Full Telstra 4G network access
- Decent international inclusions
- Refurbished handsets available
What could be improved
- Per-recharge data rollover
- Promo data expires after three recharges
Overall:
Those who want to tap into the mobile network in Australia with the farthest reach will want to stick with Telstra. Most Telstra MVNOs are powered by a slightly smaller version of the Telstra network, but Boost Mobile is the key exception, getting the entirety of Telstra's 4G footprint. This page breaks down Boost Mobile prepaid plans in terms of value, support and extras.
To start, have a look at all of Boost Mobile’s prepaid plans below:
Boost Mobile plans: Value
Value is a great place to start for telco plan appraisals because it’s likely the first place anyone in the market for a new mobile plan kicks off. But value isn’t just about how much you spend; rather, we determine value by pitting what you spend with how much data you get, more so because unlimited national talk and text is standard these days.
When judging mobile plans, we’re focusing on offers that include at least 30GB. We take this 30GB and use it as a pure dollar-to-data guide, ignoring potential discounts, promos and other extras.
The round-up below gives you an idea of how Boost Mobile ranks against key competing prepaid mobile plans (not starter packs to keep ongoing costs fairer) from our comparison engine, all of which have at least 30GB of data:
At first glance, Boost Mobile ranks quite highly, but this is somewhat deceiving because the Boost Mobile plan shown edges above 30GB per month as part of a limited-time-data deal. This means you’d be forced to buy the next Boost Mobile prepaid plan up from the one shown above, spending more to secure a consistent 30GB every 28 days. If you factor this in, Boost Mobile would be closer to the bottom, though the reach of the Telstra wholesale network helps add to the overall value.
While other prepaid providers offer data-limited banking or rollover, Boost Mobile plans allow you to roll over all unused data, albeit only to your next recharge and not in perpetuity. Basically, if you go with a Boost Mobile plan, use up your data.
Boost Mobile coverage
Boost Mobile is the only smaller provider powered by the full Telstra 4G network. To see if the Telstra 4G network is available in your area (and, therefore, Boost Mobile), use the interactive map above.
Ensure that the Telstra network is selected from the drop-down list, then tick 4G and 3G to get an approximate idea of outdoor coverage (which may be impacted by buildings and other factors). Note that 3G coverage is depicted as light purple, 4G is darker purple and 5G is the darkest of the three (if you have it selected).
If you’d prefer a more tailored solution, type your address into the search bar while hunting for a new mobile plan, then click ‘Search’. The plans on the subsequent results page will be personalised to that address.
Boost Mobile plans: Support
From experience among team members, we know that the quality of support experience can vary from great to less-than-stellar between people. It can even change for one person and different support scenarios. Because of this, we evaluate a telco’s support on how many pathways it offers to its customers.
