Vodafone Australia today announced that 4G services have been activated in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide, Newcastle and Wollongong, with plans to triple its 4G footprint by the end of the year.
The fast mobile broadband service is available now to existing Vodafone customers with compatible mobile devices, with plans for new customers to launch next month.
Smartphones in the Vodafone range which are compatible with the 4G network include the Apple iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One, Samsung Galaxy Note 2, Samsung Galaxy S3 4G, Nokia Lumia 820, Sony Xperia Z, HTC One SV an the HTC Windows Phone 8X.
Vodafone will approach 4G slightly differently to its competitors Telstra and Optus, offering 2 x 20MHz contiguous spectrum; a move which gives the network a theoretical maximum downlink speed of 100Mbps.
“Vodafone customers in 4G areas with compatible devices will have access to speeds that are among the fastest not only in the country but in many parts of the world,” Vodafone CEO Bill Morrow said today in a statement.
