Sony Mobile has announced it plans to release the new Xperia X range in Australia, with the handsets spread over Telstra, Vodafone and Virgin Mobile phone plans.
The new range includes three models: the Xperia X, the Xperia X Performance and the Xperia XA. Each of the handsets varies slightly in size and hardware, though the range will share Sony’s distinctive design aesthetic.
The Xperia X will be a Vodafone exclusive, available on Red Plans. The “super mid-range” Xperia XA will be on plans at both Vodafone and Virgin Mobile, while the high-end Xperia Performance will soon be part of the Telstra range.
All handset will be available outright on Sony’s online store and at Sony shopping centre kiosks.
As a bonus sweeter, Sony is giving Xperia X customers 12 movie downloads from the Sony Pictures library. valued at over $235. All the movies you select are yours to keep and accessible through the Movies app on the phone, and similar apps on other devices.
Same, same but different
As we’ve seen with Sony handsets over the past few years, the range features several core differences, but these will be hard to spot from the outside.
All of the Xperia X models will have a 5-inch display, though the XA will have a lower resolution 720p panel compared with the Full HD screens on the X and X Performance.
There is a similar difference in the cameras in these handsets, with the XA featuring a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera, while the X and X Performance have 23-megapixel sensors.
Each of the phones has a different processor, stepping up in power and performance across the range. To match these different computer chips, the three phones also have different battery capacities too, with the X Performance scoring a huge 2700mAh battery pack. Regardless, Sony estimates that each of the phones will handle two-days of use between charges.
