Optus today lifts the curtain on new smartphone plans with unlimited calling, borrowing ideas from both Telstra and Vodafone in making a range of truly competitive plans.
From June 10, Optus will replace its existing plans with My Plan Plus, offering unlimited SMS/MMS on all plans (starting from $35 per month) and unlimited calls from $60 per month and up.
All plans come with a decent data inclusion, plus Optus will continue to charge a flat $10 for each 1GB of excess data each month.

Data-sharing
Taking a page out of Telstra’s playbook, Optus now allows all customers to share the included data in a My Plan Plus account with multiple devices — up to 5 each SIMs. Optus charge a flat $5 fee per device you connect to a plan.
Now before you baulk at having to pay at all, don’t forget: Telstra charge $10 per month, per device. That should make the once-off fee charged by Optus seems a little more palatable.
SIM-only shakeup
Monthly SIM-only plans have also been given the My Plan Plus treatment, including unlimited messaging on all plans and unlimited calls from $45 per month. Similar to Vodafone’s Red Plans, the key Optus contract plans will have no-contract counterparts, with $30, $45 and $60 SIM-only options.
Mostly, these plans are very generous. The new $45 SIM-only plan stands out, with 2GB data and unlimited calls and messages — a plan which positions Optus well above competitor Telstra in the no-contract space, and which compares well to cheaper providers Vodafone and Virgin Mobile, and MVNOs like Yatango and Vaya.
