OPPO Find X with cameras hidden

OPPO announced its first "proper" flagship smartphone in four years overnight, and boy, it’s a doozy. With a screen-to-body ratio of almost 94%, is essentially all screen. There's no notch, and there's only the faintest hint of a chin at the bottom of the phone.

In order to achieve this feat, OPPO has hidden the Find X's camera within the body of the phone; they'll mechanically slide up when needed - reportedly in about half a second. For example, when you launch an app that requires the camera, or when you want to unlock your phone. Much like Apple, OPPO has done away with the fingerprint reader in favour of facial recognition.

OPPO Find X back with cameras revealed

The 25MP front-facing camera is paired with an infrared camera, dot projector, range sensor, and flood illuminator for 3D facial recognition, similar to what you'll find on the iPhone X. To date, other Android phones with facial recognition have predominantly relied on the front-facing camera, which can result in a less secure experience.

OPPO is also taking advantage on the 3D camera to add Omojis, it's take on Animoji. As with Animojis, Omoji lets you map your facial expressions onto an animated character.

On the back of the motorised panel, you'll find dual rear-facing 16MP and 20MP cameras.

Other key specifications for the Find X include a 6.42-inch 1080p+ display, a Snapdragon 845 processor, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of expandable storage, and a 3730mAh battery. It runs a customised version of Android 8.1. There are however two key omissions: you won't find a headphone jack, and the Find X isn't water-resistance, which is unusual for a 2018 flagship but makes sense given the sliding camera configuration.

OPPO has confirmed the Find X will be available in Australia, but local pricing and availability have yet to be confirmed. Internationally, but the Find X will launch in August at €999, which converts to almost $1,600. A local OPPO representative has however confirmed that Find X's Australian price will not be based on EU pricing, and will be appropriate "for the Australian market".
