Freeview, Australia's umbrella brand for free-to-air (FTA) TV networks, today launched a smartphone app allowing users to stream almost any FTA station on the go. Dubbed Freeview FW, the app has access to livestreams of ABC, SBS, Seven, Channel 9, TEN, ONE, ABC2/ABC4KIDS, ABC ME, ABC News 24, 7TWO, 7Mate, 7Flix, Racing.com, 9Gem, 9Go!, and 9Life
Other than Channel 9, all stations play directly within the Freeview FW app. Trying to watch Channel 9 content will launch the 9Now app if you have it installed, or direct you to your phone's app store.
"This is a fantastic new way for consumers to enjoy TV on their terms and never miss a thing, especially when they’re on the go and away from home," said Freeview CEO Liz Ross. "The Australian FTA industry has united to create and deliver a powerful mobile consumer experience – in no other market has an FTA industry collaborated to create its own live streaming app."
It is however worth noting that not all live content is viewable through the Freeview FW app, in part, due to licensing agreements. Cricket, AFL, and NRL games won't be streamable as their online rights are held by different organisations. In testing the app, we noticed that a number of Channel 10 shows - such as Dr. Phil, MASH, and Get Smart - were all listed as being "not available at this time".
Freeview FW also aggregates catch-up content, although attempting to watch it will either direct you to the network's own app, or their website. Other functionality includes a comprehensive TV guide and the ability to set reminders as to when your favourite shows are on.
Freeview FW is available for iPhone and Android.
