If you're thinking about picking up a new iPhone, you may want to hold off a little longer. Right now is a terrible time to buy the fruitiest handset.
Apple is expected to reveal the iPhone 17 family on September 9, according to sources from German phone providers cited by iphone-ticker.de. Converted to AEST, that would suggest a reveal event in the early hours of September 10 for anyone who wants to play along at home. Bloomberg has also reported that the iPhone 17 will be announced during the week of September 8.
Pre-orders would then start on September 12 ahead of a September 19 release, which fits with Apple's typical trends.
Rumours suggest Apple will introduce a thinner and lighter iPhone 17 Air this year, instead of an iPhone 17 Plus. Other expected changes include a 120Hz display on the standard iPhone 17, a redesigned camera island with an upgraded telephoto lens on the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, a new chipset, and more durable glass.
Even if you're not interested in buying an iPhone 17, the new launch of a new handset means current models will get cheaper. Last year, Apple cut the price of the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 14, and iPhone 14 Plus the same day it announced the iPhone 16 family. It discontinued the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 13 at the same time.
This year, we're expecting Apple to slash prices on the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 15, and iPhone 15 Plus. The iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max are all likely to be discontinued. If this is the case, they won't get official price cuts, but we'll almost certainly see some solid deals as retailers try and get through the last of their stock.
