Vodafone has extended its free access campaign until September 9. Previously it was planned to end on August 19.

The free access campaign allows new subscribers unlimited data for the first two months of their contract. The idea behind this is to allow you to really go wild and see the kinds of services you’d ideally use on your device if you didn’t have to worry about data limits.

You may honestly be surprised at how much of your cap you aren’t using each month. A lot of folk end up wasting up to half of their monthly cap, simply because they’re afraid of going overboard. Then, when it’s time to get a new plan, they tend to down-grade to a cheaper plan with less data, because they are under the impression that they don’t need or want what they already have.

At the end of the free-access two month period a Vodafone representative will contact you with regards to what plan you would like to sign up to. They will have data on your usage (general statistics only), and will help you decide if you want to continue using your phone as you have, or if you’d prefer to cut back a little and go for a cheaper cap.

No more bill shock

Not only is Vodafone helping to tailor a plan to you through this initiative, but even if you do mess up and go over your cap there are no more big over-use fees when it comes to data.

Just like Optus has done with its My Plan Plus plans, Vodafone will now only charge you $10 if you go over your limit, and afford you a further 1GB to use until the end of the month. This can be done any number of times per month, and at the end your plan reverts back to its original base cost with the original amount of data.

This is hugely cheaper than the per-MB fees Vodafone used to charge and most Aussie carriers still do. It’s a great system for letting you really use your phone however you want and decide for yourself if it’s worth an extra tenner this month for a decent chunk more data.
