Samsung and Dr Denim have made a pair of jeans with one functional pocket designed to be just big enough to fit the Galaxy Z Flip 3, and I have some thoughts.
I’m no fashion writer so I won’t pretend to know about those trends, but as a tech writer I know when a manufacturer wants to lock you into an ecosystem. Measuring in at just about half the size of an ordinary smartphone the Z Flip pocket isn’t going to accommodate anything other than Samsung’s flippy device.
It would be one thing if the jeans had the Z Flip sized pocket as an additional storage solution, but the design has done away with the other pockets entirely. Both back pockets have been removed, and the front ones are stitched over with an emblazoned golden 'Z'.
It's like buying AirPods for your iPhone: you can make them work with another device but it is counterintuitive
In a release Samsung declared small, square pockets the next big trend, and all but vowed to “do away with bulky unfashionable pockets” that you “can’t help but fill to the brim”. I recently wrote an article about which iPhones you can actually fit into a woman’s jeans pocket, and the idea of a ‘bulky’ pocket did not come up once.
Womens pockets in particular are known to be tiny, fitting almost nothing in them - sure they may be full to the brim but that is because of the sheer lack of space. Across the internet, women are always asking for more pockets, not for less.
I’ve been using the Galaxy Z Flip 3 as my main driver for about three weeks now, and whenever someone asks me about it I end up gushing about how great it is to have a phone that fits in my pocket. As a woman dealing with the eternal struggle of tiny pockets, and fake pockets, and hand bags, and the ever-growing size of smartphones that don’t fit into any of them - the Z Flip 3 has been a revelation. It may as well sing Hallelujah as it emerges from my pants.
The other day I left for a night out without a bag, with just my keys and phone in my pockets. Never in my adult life have I been able to do that. I was free. And now the Z Flip Pocket Denim Jeans want to take that away again? What a stitch up.
These jeans are going for $1,499 which is a bit pricier than other Dr Denim jeans that retail for around $109.95 - but you do get a Galaxy Z Flip 3 with them for free.
Alternatively, if you like the idea of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 but aren’t in the market for a pair of jeans then you can look at the most popular plans below.
