Electronic or Embedded SIMs have been popular abroad for some time but are now becoming more readily available in Australia. All three major Australian providers offer eSIM services for phones, wearables and tablets, but MVNOs currently aren't able to provide eSIMs to customers.
Unlike traditional SIM cards which can be taken in and out of devices, eSIM is a rewritable SIM card built into a device. Rather than opening your phone’s SIM slot and putting the new SIM card in, with eSIM you simply need to download the ‘software SIM’ from the provider of your choice.
Not all smartphones, tablets and wearables are eSIM compatible but they are becoming more prevalent.
Telstra recently announced a similar initiative, which allows existing customers to swap from a physical SIM to an eSIM via the Telstra app. New customers still have to go to into a store or have a QR mailed to them if they'd prefer a QR code. Vodafone will email a QR code to customers after an eSIM.
