Optus has added 5G support to select postpaid mobile broadband plans, building out its next-generation network offering.
5G connectivity is available on Optus' $45 and $60 per month mobile broadband plans. These include 60GB and 100GB of data, respectively. If you go over your allowance, you'll be able to keep using your service with unlimited data capped to speeds of 1.5Mbps. As is the norm for Optus, these plans also include an Optus Sport subscription.
Optus' 5G mobile broadband plans are available as SIM-only or bundled with a ZTE 5G Portable WiFi Modem. Getting the modem will add $18.12 per month to your bill on a 24-month repayment term.
The ZTE 5G modem features a battery that should last up to nine hours, can connect 32 device simultaneously, and supports WiFi 6. It isn't mmWave 5G ready, however.
Based on their inclusions, Optus' 5G mobile broadband plans aren't meant to replace a home internet connection. They're seemingly more targeted for on the go usage, due to capping out at 100GB.
Optus does also have two 5G home internet plans with unlimited data, however. Other than price, the main difference is that Optus' 5G home internet plans come with a modem that requires a constant source of power and can't be moved from address to address with relocating your service. The ZTE 5G modem Optus offers is battery powered and can be used wherever you have Optus coverage.
Optus' new range of mobile broadband plans also marks the first time we've seen the telco differentiate plans based on whether they have 5G or not. Its two more affordable postpaid mobile broadband plans are restricted to 4G coverage.
"Customers want options and we are offering 4G only data plans for those who may not want or need 5G, as well as 5G plan options which have higher data allocations," said a spokesperson.
While Telstra has been restricting 5G to more expensive plans since it launched the new network, Optus previously hadn't price-gated next-generation connectivity.
