Motorola's new Razr 40 will be the most affordable foldable phone to launch in Australia, retailing for a price of $999 when it goes on sale next month.
Until now, $1,499 is the cheapest we've seen a flip-style foldable come to market at locally. The 2022 Razr launched at $1,499, while the initial price for the form factor was well over $2,000 back in 2020.
The Razr 40 is launching alongside the Razr 40 Ultra, Motorola's more premium take on a foldable. The Razr 40 Ultra boasts the largest external display on a flip-style foldable to date, but is a bit more expensive with a $1,499 price tag.
Razr 40 is essentially a midrange take of a flip phone, pairing the modern form factor with more modest specs. The external display is just 1.5-inch and it's powered by a Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset, rather than a more beefy 8-series processor.
Other key specifications for the Razr 40 include a 6.9-inch 1080p+ display with a 144Hz refresh rate, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, IP52 splash-resistance, and a 4,200mAh battery. You'll find a 64MP primary camera and 13MP ultra-wide camera paired with a 32MP selfie camera.

The Razr 40 Ultra is Motorola's new flagship flip phone. The key improvement is a much larger 3.6-inch external display, which is the biggest we've seen on a flip-style foldable. It edges out the 3.26-inch display on OPPO's Find N2 Flip and is significantly bigger than the 1.9-inch cover display on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4.
From a practical perspective, the larger size allows you to run full apps on the Razr 40 Ultra's external display. It's even big enough to load up a keyboard, so you don't need to unfold the phone to reply to a message. You won't see much else on the screen when the keyboard is up, however.
Other key specifications include a 6.9-inch 1080p+ display with a 165Hz refresh rate, a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, IP52 splash-resistance, and a 3,800mAh battery. In terms of cameras, the phone has a 12MP primary lens, 13MP ultra-wide lens, and a 32MP selfie camera.
Motorola will provide both the Razr 40 and Razr 40 Ultra with three major operating system upgrades and four years of security updates. While that falls short of the four major upgrades and five years of Samsung offers, it's a welcome improvement from Motorola.
If you're looking to get your hands on Motorola's new foldables, the Razr 40 Ultra will be available to pre-order from June 13 ahead of a July 10 release date. It will come in a choice of infinite Black, Glacier Blue, or Viva Magenta with a vegan leather finish.
The more affordable Razr goes on sale a little later, and will be available to pre-order from July 10 ahead of a July 21 release date. It will come in a choice of Sage Green, Vanilla White, and Summer Lilac. These all have a vegan leather finish.
Both phones will be available from major retailers like JB Hi-Fi and Harvey Norman outright, and from Telstra on a mobile plan.
