Alongside the new iPhone 16, Apple today announced the Apple Watch Series 10, its latest smartwatch. While mainline Apple Watches haven't changed too much over the past years, the Series 10 benefits from a redesign touting larger displays and a thinner and lighter build.
The Apple Watch Series 10 is available in a choice of 42mm or 46mm case sizes, up from 41mm and 45mm. This refers to the entire size of the Watch, rather than just the display. Apple says the screen is up to 30% larger than the Apple Watch Series 6, and even slightly larger than the Apple Watch Ultra 2 display. This is despite the fact the Apple Watch Ultra 2 has a larger 49mm case size.
The display itself also gets an upgrade. It's easier to view off-angle for better glanceability, and more power efficient. This allows it to refresh once every second in always-on mode, so you now get a ticking second hand.
The Apple Watch Series 10 is also up to 10% thinner and 10% lighter than the Apple Watch Series 10 for aluminium models. Stainless steel models have been replaced with polished titanium, and are up to 20% lighter than.
One potentially meaningful new addition is Sleep Apnoea Detection. If you wear the Apple Watch Series 10 when sleeping, it will use the accelerometer to look for disturbances. You'll then be alerted if it finds a consistent pattern over 30 days.
Sleep Apnoea Detection will be available in over 150 countries, but it's not clear if Australia is included. The Australian Apple website doesn't mention the feature, while the international site does. The feature will also come to Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2.
Other new features include 6m of dive resistance (allowing you to take the Apple Watch Series 10 snorkelling, but not scuba diving), a new Tides app for surfing, and a water temperature sensor. For the first time, the speakers on the Apple Watch Series 10 will be able to play music and podcasts.
You can pre-order the Apple Watch Series 10 from today ahead of a September 20 release date. Pricing starts at $649 for an aluminium model, or $1,199 for a titanium model.
Aluminium models are available in silver, rose gold, or polished jet black. Titanium models are available in natural, gold, or slate.

In addition, Apple also announced a new black colourway for the Apple Watch Ultra 2. The black Apple Watch Ultra 2 is unchanged otherwise, but comes with new colour-matching bands.
Apple is also launching a new Milanese Loop band made from titanium to go with both the new black colour and original natural titanium finish.
The black Apple Watch Ultra 2 can also be pre-ordered today ahead of a September 20 release date. It maintains its $1,399 price point.
