When it comes to roaming in Vietnam, you've got plenty of options. You can opt for an eSIM from Airalo, Jetpac, or Saily, a physical SIM card from a Vietnam telco, or a pay-per-day plan from your telco.
Whether you're aching to visit Vietnam for its Buddhist pagodas, stunning sandy white beaches or native wildlife, you'll want to make sure you don't wander too far off-grid and can still stay in touch with everyone back home.
Before we start, here are the cheapest roaming-compatible plans from each telco featured in this guide:
Vietnam eSIMs
If you have a phone with eSIM, travel eSIMs are a good option as they represent decent value for money. If you want, you can even download and activate a travel eSIM before you leave Australia.
If you buy a travel eSIM for Vietnam through Airalo, you can get a 1GB plan with a three-day expiry for as little as $6 or a 50GB plan with a 30-day expiry for $71. Just be aware that these plans are data-only, so you won't be able to make phone calls. Plans will have 5G connectivity in some destinations.
Airalo also sells travel eSIMs for Asia if you're going to multiple destinations. For example, you'll pay $22 for a 5GB eSIM with a 30-day expiry, available for use in 18 countries, including China, Thailand, and Cambodia.
Jetpac is another travel eSIM provider, backed by Circles.Life. Its eSIMs tend to be cheaper than Airalo, though the plans are data-only.
Jetpac Vietnam eSIMs have a unique perk where you can score free airport lounge access if your flight is delayed (and meets the threshold). This is done by registering your flight in the Jetpac app. You can bring one travel companion into the lounge with you.
Saily is another popular eSIM provider, but it is better for longer trips. Unless you only need 1GB of data, you'll need to pay for a 30-day eSIM at a minimum. If you'll be away for that long, that might not be a bad thing, but you can save money with shorter-expiry eSIMs on other providers.
Here's a look at travel eSIMs for Vietnam from some of our favourite providers with at least 5GB and a seven-day expiry:
| Provider | Plan | |
|---|---|---|
| Airalo | $14.50 for 5GB with a seven-day expiry | View on Airalo |
| Jetpac | USD$9 for 5GB with a seven-day expiry | View on Jetpac |
| Saily | USD$10.99 for 5GB with a 30-day expiry | View on Saily |
For a longer trip, here's a look at plans with at least 10GB and a 14-day expiry minimum:
| Provider | Plan | |
|---|---|---|
| Airalo | $25.50 for 10GB with a 15-day expiry | View on Airalo |
| Jetpac | USD$18 for 10GB with a 30-day expiry | View on Jetpac |
| Saily | USD$3.99 for 10GB with a 30-day expiry | View on Saily |
Just be aware that most Vietnam travel eSIM options are data-only. This means you won't be able to make calls or send text messages using any of the above travel eSIMs.
Get a Vietnam SIM card
If you're headed to Vietnam for a long period of time, we highly recommend investing in a Vietnam SIM card. While International Roaming is an easy option, it's not an affordable long-term plan.
If you're interested in purchasing a local SIM, MobiFone, Viettel, and Vinaphone are the three main telcos in Vietnam. You can find tourist SIMs available at international airports with prices starting around VND$100,00 ($5.37 AUD based on the current exchange rate) for plans with 1 GB and a five-day expiry.
In terms of coverage, Viettel is your best bet — it's like the Telstra of Vietnam, covering rural areas where other telcos do not. All options rank the same in affordability and overall speed.
Roaming Vietnam with your telco
For shorter trips, roaming with your telco can be a good option. It is also the only way to keep using your Australian number while in Vietnam, which can be important if you're overseas for business rather than leisure.
Below, we've taken a look at the price per day and price per gigabyte for providers you can roam in Vietnam with at a decent rate. We haven't looked at providers that are too expensive or only have pay-as-you-go options. Click on any provider's name to get more information about their roaming offer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you buy a Vietnam SIM card in Australia?
Yes. You can buy and set up a Vietnam eSIM before you leave Australia, or if you want a physical Vietnam SIM card, there are websites like SIMCorner and Simify that will ship the SIM to your Australian address. This way, you don't have to spend time looking for one when you arrive. Just be sure to double-check what these SIMs include, as they're often different to the SIMs you can get on arrival.
Can I use my Australian phone in Vietnam?
There shouldn't be any issues with using the vast majority of Australian phones in Vietnam. If you want to use a Vietnam SIM, you'll just need to make sure it's unlocked.
Is it cheaper to get a SIM card in Vietnam?
For longer trips, Vietnam SIMs are more affordable as pay-per-day add-on roaming options tend to add up as days turn into weeks. Many also include more Asian countries, so if you plan to travel to a wide variety of locations, this helps too.
