We love our Apple Watches at WhistleOut. Well, at the least, I do. Too much probably; I get anxious if I'm not wearing mine. I mean, why even move if it's not getting me closer to filling my activity rings?
If you're in the same boat (although presumably without the anxiety) and want to get the most of your teeny tiny wrist-based iPhone-companion, here are our favourite Apple Watch apps.
Sleep++
Available on: Apple Watch
The Apple Watch doesn't work as a sleep tracker out of the box, but that doesn't mean you can’t use it as one. If you want to know more about what your body is up to in the early hours, Sleep++ is one of the smartest sleep tracking Apple Watch apps around.
While past versions required you to manually start and stop your sleep sessions to capture data, Sleep++ 3 simply requires wearing an Apple Watch to bed. All information captured will be logged in your iPhone's Health app.
Calcbot
Available on: Apple Watch
Apple Watch doesn't have a native calculator app for some reason, but there's a bunch of third party solutions to fill your small screen math needs. Our favourite is Calcbot.
The free version has all your typical calculator functions, but there's a premium version that can also be used for unit and currency conversions.
iTranslate
Available on: Apple Watch
It's no babelfish, but it comes close. With iTranslate, you can speak into your watch and get an almost instant translation without even having to pull out your iPhone. Better yet, iTranslate supports over 100 different languages.
A must have if you're travelling - just make sure you've got your international data sorted.
Lifeline
Available on: Apple Watch
Lifeline is an enthralling text-based adventure game where you help Taylor - a marooned astronaut on an alien moon - make life or death decisions.
Instead of playing out like a traditional experience where you just sit down and game, Lifeline's story unfolds through notifications that you'll receive throughout your day. You can even respond to Taylor directly from your Apple Watch, without needing to launch the app.
Lifeline is easily one of the more unique experiences the Apple Watch has to offer.
Carrot Weather
Available on: Apple Watch
If you want a weather app with personality, you need Carrot Weather in your life. On top of providing surprising accurately forecasts (almost down to the minute in terms of rain, for example), you're able adjust the app's temperament.
Pick from Professional, Friendly, Snarky, Homicidal, or Overkill, and get your weather delivered with quips like "that cloud looks like a toddler drowning a rubber ducky".
Smart Attack Numbers
Available on: Apple Watch
Smart Attack Numbers is a quick and simple math game you can play on your Watch: it throws sums at you until you get one wrong.
While Smart Attack Numbers isn't very hard, it requires quick thinking and is a fun way to kill a couple of minutes.
How to install an Apple Watch app
If you want to install an app on your Apple Watch, you'll need to download it to your paired iPhone first via the iOS App Store. After the app in question is on your iPhone, follow these steps:
- Open the Apple Watch app
- Scroll down to the bottom of the My Watch pane
- This will show a list of apps that you have on your iPhone that that you can install on your Apple Watch
