Samsung's latest foldable phones were just announced, and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra sits at the top-end of the family. While the "Ultra" part of the name is new, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is the successor to last year's Galaxy Z Fold 7, maintaining the same overall form factor. Key changes this year include an even thinner build, an anti-reflective coating on the screen, a larger battery, and new 50MP ultra-wide lens.
Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra pre-orders are now open ahead of an August 14 release date.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra features

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra design
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra doesn't look too different to the Galaxy Z Fold 7, but it is ever-so-slightly thinner. When unfolded, the phone is 4.1mm at its thinnest point, down from 4.2mm. Samsung has also reduced the pressure needed to unfold the phone.
The external and internal displays are the same size as on last year's model, 6.5-inch and 8-inch, respectively, but the internal display has a few upgrades. These include a higher resolution, increased peak brightness, and an anti-reflective finish.
Notably, Samsung has all but eliminated the crease on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, bringing the phone in line with foldable phones like OPPO's Find N6.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is available in a choice of violet shadow, cream, and graphite. There's also an online-exclusive green shadow variant.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra camera
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra has one major camera upgrade: the ultra-wide lens is now 50MP, up from 12MP on the previous model. There aren't any changes to the other cameras, which include a 200MP primary lens, 10MP 3x zoom lens, and 10MP selfie cameras on both the internal and external display.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra battery
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra has a 5,000mAh battery, which is the largest battery we've seen in a Samsung foldable yet. In our testing last year, we found the Galaxy Z Fold 7 got around six hours of screen time per charge, so we'd expect even better from the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra has faster charging: a 30-minute top-up will take the phone from flat to 67%.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra processor
The Galaxy Z Fold Ultra 8 is powered by a custom version of Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. This is the same processor found in Samsung's Galaxy S26 Ultra.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra software updates
Samsung says the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will get seven years of major operating system upgrades and seven years of security updates. This is in line with Samsung's Galaxy S series phones, and a best-in-class promise for an Android device. As such, we're expecting Android 23 to be the last version of Android the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra gets.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra 5G
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra naturally has 5G connectivity. WhistleOut's coverage checker tool has 5G coverage maps, making it easy to see whether you can get 5G. All you need to do is pop in your address when searching for a new phone plan. After you've done so and hit Search, you can jump straight to the coverage map by tapping See Coverage Map and then tapping Click To Activate Interactive Map.
This map will show you what kind of coverage you have in your area. 5G coverage is highlighted using the darkest shade of purple, but unticking 4G can help make it clearer. The drop-down menu lets you choose between telcos.
Coverage maps are only approximate, only show outdoor coverage, and may be impacted by local conditions such as buildings.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra plan providers
Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone are all ranging the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. Here's a breakdown of the major benefits you can expect each provider to offer.
Telstra Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra plans
Telstra Galaxy plans are often the priciest on the Australian market, but they do come with a host of perks.
Telstra lets you pay your Galaxy off over 12, 24, or 36 months, and all plans are free from excess data charges. If you go over your cap, your data will simply be slowed to speeds of 1.5Mbps, which is still fast enough to stream video in SD. But speeds may be slower during peak times.
Telstra still has Australia's largest mobile network, covering over 2.14 million square kilometres. In addition, Telstra has a partnership with Starlink operator SpaceX, allowing you to send text messages via satellite when mobile coverage is unavailable. A clear view of the sky is needed for this.
Telstra is the only telco in Australia to still have a rewards program. As a customer, you earn points for every dollar spent with Telstra, which can then be redeemed for discounts on new tech.
Optus Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra plans
- Discounted access to streaming services through SubHub
- $5 for 5GB of roaming data when overseas
Optus Galaxy plans come with solid data inclusions.
Higher-end Optus plans also come with unlimited international calls to selected destinations included with the plan.
All Optus plans are contract-free, and devices can be paid off across 12, 24, or 36 months.
In addition, all Optus postpaid plans are free from excess data charges. If you go over your allowance, you'll be slowed to 1.5Mbps rather than being billed $10 per gigabyte.
Vodafone Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra plans
Vodafone Galaxy plans may not come with the kinds of freebies and perks you can get from Optus or Telstra, but they have bonuses when it comes to bundling.
If you have a Vodafone mobile plan, you can get most of the telco's internet plans - NBN, 5G home internet, and 4G home internet - at a discounted rate.
Vodafone customers also save $5 per month if they bundle a second mobile plan on to their account, and then an extra $15 for each plan after.
Vodafone postpaid plans are all free from excess data charges. When you go over your plan allowance, you'll be capped at 2Mbps.
You'll also get access to Vodafone's famous $5 roaming, which is still easily the best way to travel with your Australian phone number.
Thanks to a network sharing agreement with Optus, Vodafone's network coverage is now practically identical to Optus' when it comes to 4G.
How to choose the best Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra plan for you
There are a few key factors to keep in mind when picking a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra plan:
- Answering "how much mobile data do I use" can help you avoid overspending. Don't pay for more data than you need
- Decide whether you want to pay off your phone shorter on a 24-month plan or get a smaller bill over a longer period of time on a 36-month plan
- If you're a frequent overseas traveller, consider any international roaming inclusions
- You may also want to make international phone calls so check if the destinations you may be calling are included in your plan
