Samsung's latest foldable phones were just announced, and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 takes on an all-new shape. It's still a book-style foldable, but smaller and wider. When unfolded, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is shaped more like a conventional tablet, compared to the squarer design of past foldables. This, among other things, should make the Galaxy Z Fold 8 better for watching content on the go.
Galaxy Z Fold 8 pre-orders are now live ahead of an August 14 release date.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 features

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 design
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is still a book-style foldable, but has a fresh design with a wider aspect ratio. When folded, the device is passport-shaped, with a 5.5-inch external display. Unfolded it has a 7.6-inch display with a 4:3 aspect ratio. This is a more conventional aspect ratio for tablets, and will reduce the amount of black bars when watching content. Since the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is a smaller device, it is also lighter, weighing it at just 201g.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is available in a choice of lavender, cream and graphite. There's also an online-exclusive pistachio variant.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 camera
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 has two rear cameras: a 50MP primary lens and a 50MP ultra-wide lens. There's a 10MP selfie camera on both the internal and external display.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 battery
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 has a 4,800mAh battery, which is larger than we saw in last year's Galaxy Z Fold 7. While the form factor is different, the larger battery should still make an improvement. In our testing last year, we found the Galaxy Z Fold 7 got around six hours of screen time per charge, which is enough for a full day of moderate usage, so we'd expect better from the Galaxy Z Fold 8.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 processor
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is powered by a custom version of Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. This is the same processor found in Samsung's Galaxy S26 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 software updates
Samsung says the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will get seven years of major operating system upgrades and seven years of security updates. This is in line with Samsung's Galaxy S series phones, and a best-in-class promise for an Android device. As such, we're expecting Android 23 to be the last version of Android the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will receive.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 5G
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 naturally has 5G connectivity. WhistleOut's coverage checker tool has 5G coverage maps, making it easy to see whether you can get 5G. All you need to do is pop in your address when searching for a new phone plan. After you've done so and hit Search, you can jump straight to the coverage map by tapping See Coverage Map and then tapping Click To Activate Interactive Map.
This map will show you what kind of coverage you have in your area. 5G coverage is highlighted using the darkest shade of purple, but unticking 4G can help make it clearer. The drop-down menu lets you choose between telcos.
Coverage maps are only approximate, only show outdoor coverage, and may be impacted by local conditions such as buildings.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 plan providers
Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone are all ranging the Galaxy Z Fold 8. Here's a breakdown of the major benefits you can expect each provider to offer.
Telstra Galaxy Z Fold 8 plans
Telstra Galaxy plans are often the priciest on the Australian market, but they do come with a host of perks.
Telstra lets you pay your Galaxy off over 12, 24, or 36 months, and all plans are free from excess data charges. If you go over your cap, your data will simply be slowed to speeds of 1.5Mbps, which is still fast enough to stream video in SD. But speeds may be slower during peak times.
Telstra still has Australia's largest mobile network, covering over 2.14 million square kilometres. In addition, Telstra has a partnership with Starlink operator SpaceX, allowing you to send text messages via satellite when mobile coverage is unavailable. A clear view of the sky is needed for this.
Telstra is the only telco in Australia to still have a rewards program. As a customer, you earn points for every dollar spent with Telstra, which can then be redeemed for discounts on new tech.
Optus Galaxy Z Fold 8 plans
- Discounted access to streaming services through SubHub
- $5 for 5GB of roaming data when overseas
Optus Galaxy plans come with solid data inclusions.
Higher-end Optus plans also come with unlimited international calls to selected destinations included with the plan.
All Optus plans are contract-free, and devices can be paid off across 12, 24, or 36 months.
In addition, all Optus postpaid plans are free from excess data charges. If you go over your allowance, you'll be slowed to 1.5Mbps rather than being billed $10 per gigabyte.
Vodafone Galaxy Z Fold 8 plans
Vodafone Galaxy plans may not come with the kinds of freebies and perks you can get from Optus or Telstra, but they have bonuses when it comes to bundling.
If you have a Vodafone mobile plan, you can get most of the telco's internet plans - NBN, 5G home internet, and 4G home internet - at a discounted rate.
Vodafone customers also save $5 per month if they bundle a second mobile plan on to their account, and then an extra $15 for each plan after.
Vodafone postpaid plans are all free from excess data charges. When you go over your plan allowance, you'll be capped at 2Mbps.
You'll also get access to Vodafone's famous $5 roaming, which is still easily the best way to travel with your Australian phone number.
Thanks to a network sharing agreement with Optus, Vodafone's network coverage is now practically identical to Optus' when it comes to 4G.
How to choose the best Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 plan for you
There are a few key factors to keep in mind when picking a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 plan:
- Answering "how much mobile data do I use" can help you avoid overspending. Don't pay for more data than you need
- Decide whether you want to pay off your phone shorter on a 24-month plan or get a smaller bill over a longer period of time on a 36-month plan
- If you're a frequent overseas traveller, consider any international roaming inclusions
- You may also want to make international phone calls so check if the destinations you may be calling are included in your plan
