Optus eSIM for travellers
If you're travelling to Australia and want an eSIM on the Optus network, you have a few options. For a short trip, you might want to pick up an Optus prepaid SIM with a seven-day expiry:
Or, you could check out a plan from a travel eSIM provider such as Airalo. They may suit you better for trips past a week, as there are Options cheaper than Optus' 28-day plans if you only need a few gigabytes of data.
Here are Airalo's Australian eSIM plans which use the Optus network:
| Expiry | Data from | Prices (AUD) from | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 days | 1GB | $6 | View on Airalo |
| 7 days | 3GB | $12 | View on Airalo |
| 15 days | 5GB | $15.50 | View on Airalo |
| 30 days | 5GB | $16.50 | View on Airalo |
Airalo also offers unlimited data eSIM plans for Australia, but these are on the more expensive side. They start at $17 with a 3-day expiry. It's not truly unlimited data. Instead, you have 3GB of data to use per day at maximum download speeds before it's slowed right down to a barely usable 1Mbps.

How to get an Optus eSIM

As long as you have an eSIM-compatible device you can get an eSIM when you sign up for any Optus mobile plan.
This includes Optus' postpaid Choice Plus plans and its prepaid Flex Plus plans.
You'll activate your eSIM as part of the setup process through the My Optus app. As with a regular SIM, eSIM activation can take between 15 minutes and four hours.
We've outlined the steps below.
- Turn on your eSIM-capable device and connect to an internet network e.g. home WiFi
- Confirm you have the latest version of the My Optus app installed
- Open the My Optus app, tap Account, followed by SIM Management and then Activate eSIM
- Follow the on-screen prompts
If you've received a QR code from an Optus store or been sent one in the mail, simply scan the QR code and follow the prompts.
If you're transferring your number from your old provider, you may want to do the transfer within porting hours. These are between 8am and 8pm AEST Monday to Friday, and from 10am to 6pm AEST on Saturdays.
How to change your physical Optus SIM to an eSIM
If you're already signed up to an Optus mobile plan and have a physical SIM, you can convert it to an eSIM. Of course, you'll need an eSIM-compatible device, but to actually enable the change you'll need to call Optus and ask them to set it up or visit in-store.
Moving your Optus eSIM from one phone to another
One of the benefits of eSIM is that they are transferable. To activate your eSIM on another device, you'll need to follow the eSIM activation process on your new device. However, you can't have two active eSIM profiles at once, so it will be deactivated on the old phone in the process. See the steps above.
Optus eSIM for smartwatches
eSIM enables the use of a 4G connected smartwatch paired with your phone so you can make calls and receive texts on your watch and leave your hand at home. The process of setting up your smartwatch eSIM varies by make and model but is a straightforward process.
Optus allows you to share your mobile number between your phone and smartwatch with Number Share. Number Share is available for Apple Watch and Galaxy Watch, and most Pixel Watch models. It costs $5 per month on top of your mobile plan fees.
