Some of us have gotten used to not getting carded at venues anymore, but it seems like that is about to change. It is looking likely that more places will be asking to see a different form of ID before you can get in - Your proof of vaccination.

Phone, wallet, keys, vaccination card. It’s the new reality, and you really don’t want to be standing out the front of your favourite bar missing a card you need to get in. Luckily you can download, and store your vaccination passport directly to your phone. In this guide, we show you how.

How to link your MyGov to Medicare

Before you can download and save your proof of immunisation to your device, you’ll need to connect your Medicare to your MyGov account. And unless you’re really on top of your Medicare then it can be a bit of a nightmare.

You’ll need to login to your MyGov and find the Link other services area. There you can link your Medicare, but you’ll need to have your Medicare card and a good memory to get through the process. Once you pop your Medicare details in you’ll be required to answer a bunch of questions about how you’ve used your Medicare card recently.

If your details aren’t up to date, like mine weren’t, this might be a bit tricky. Luckily you don’t need to answer them all correctly, but you will need to answer enough of them in order to link your account. Although Medicare doesn’t specify on site exactly how many correct answers you need, I got in with around four right answers. May the odds be ever in your favour.

Once you’re linked, then you can move on to get your vaccination passport on your phone.

Linking MyGov and Medicare: A 4-step guide
  1. Login to MyGov
  2. Select Link other service, and click Medicare
  3. Fill in your Medicare Card details
  4. Answer the questions to the best of your ability

Download your Immunisation History to your phone

Once your MyGov and Medicare are linked you’ve got a few options to choose from. The easiest way to get your Immunisation History to your phone is through the Express Plus Medicare App. After this is installed, and you acquire your Immunisation History you’ll be able to save your proof of vaccination to your Apple, or Android wallet.

Get your Immunisation History through the Express Plus Medicare App
  1. Download the Express Plus Medicare App from Google Play, or the App Store
  2. Login to your My Gov account through the app
  3. Select Immunisation History, and select the person whose document you want to view
  4. Tap View immunisation history statement
  5. Tap the Share icon in the top right corner
  6. From here, you can save your history to be able to access offline through the Medicare app, or add it to your phone wallet. More on that in the next sections.

What to do if you don’t have Medicare

If you're not eligible, or don't have Medicare then you can still download your COVID-19 digital certificate using the Individual Healthcare Identifiers (IHI) through MyGov.

  1. Sign in to your MyGov
  2. Select Individual Healthcare Identifiers
  3. Pick View immunisation history, and share to either Apple Wallet, or Save to phone to access through Google Pay.

Add your vaccination passport to your iPhone wallet

If you’ve got an iPhone you can add your COVID-19 digital certificate to your Apple Wallet. This is a simple way to make sure you’ve always got your proof of vaccination on you.

To do so, follow the instructions above to get your immunisation history through the Express Plus Medicare App, up until step 5, then select add to Apple Wallet. You’ll now be able to access your COVID-19 digital certificate in the same way you can access your other cards.

  1. Select your Immunisation history from the services section in the Express Plus Medicare App
  2. Pick your name, and view COVID-19 digital certificate

Add your vaccination passport to your Android wallet

For Android users, you’ll need to make sure you’ve downloaded Google Pay if you haven’t already. Once you have had both doses of your chosen vaccine you’ll get the option to add your COVID-19 Card to your Google Pay. Unfortunately, if you’ve only had one, you will have to use your Medicare App as proof in the interim.

When you’re fully vaxed it’s a simple process, follow the instructions on getting your immunisation history through the Express Plus Medicare App until Step 5, and instead select Save to Phone.
