NBN today announced that four million premises are now able to connect to the National Broadband Network. The company says that more than a third of Australian premises can now get internet delivered over the National Broadband Network, and expects to up this to half by around the middle of the year.

"The rollout continues to accelerate; our weekly growth, particularly over the calendar year, shows the shift in scale," said NBN CEO Bill Morrow. "Now, 80 per cent of the country is either in design, in construction or already able to order a service. This shows the vast reach of [National Broadband Network] into a majority of communities across the country."

"The company is on track to reach the half-way point of the rollout this year, and we are confident in our progress towards Australia being the first fully-connected continent."

While four million premises can connect to the NBN, as of last week, less than half of those premises have an activate National Broadband Network internet connection.

NBN hopes that all Australians will be able to connect to the National Broadband Network by 2020. It expects that 11.9 million premises will be ready for service, and that eight million of these will have an active connection.

"We now have the flexibility and the right technologies in place to design and build the network at the speed and scale needed to reach our end goal by 2020," said NBN Chief Network Engineering Officer Peter Ryan.
