Elon Musk, philanthropist and madman, is one step closer to being able to provide high-speed internet for Australians.
SpaceX - the same people who launched a Tesla to Mars - are also behind Starlink, which it claims will become the world’s most advanced broadband internet system.
Using high-speed, satellite based broadband, the service is aimed at providing a good quality connection to locations that have had limited or no access before.
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) announced that SpaceX is approved for inclusion in Australia’s Foreign Space Objects Determination. Meaning, that SpaceX is now one of three international companies that are approved to obtain a space apparatus license from Australia.
Before you get excited, we’re not quite there yet. Inclusion on this list is a prerequisite for starting the process of seeking regulatory approval to operate in Australia.
Starlink aims to launch in North America and Canada this year, with global expansion on the cards for 2021. This is in Elon Musk time though, so we will have to wait and see.
