How long are you spending cozied up in front of a screen right now? Aussies will spend around 75% of the hours they're awake online this winter according to Dodo's new Birdwatchers Report which surveyed 1,018 people.
That equates to 1,104 hours spent looking at one screen or another. Out of those thousand hours, around 200 will be spent streaming content. Turning to the TV is something Aussies are
more likely to during winter. 56% of respondents turn on the TV if it's a rainy day while 43% say they tune in just
because of a winter chill.
The survey asked respondents to report their top "guilty pleasure" online. 51% of respondents said their top guilty pleasure was late-night scrolling which was followed by 41% who reported their top guilty pleasure was bingeing streaming shows.
25% of respondents said they were guilty of "binge watch betrayal" where they secretly watch a show they were supposed to wait and watch with someone else. Gen Z and millennials were most guilty with 42% and 28% respectively.
Most people surveyed have binged shows for six hours uninterrupted or more but the younger age groups blew past this with over eight hours for Gen Z and seven and a half hours for millennials.
It's likely that our streaming habits are having an impact on our wallets but 87% of respondents said they wouldn't be willing to switch to free versions of streaming to save money. A third of Aussies actually said they would need to paid $100,000 to go offline for one week.
Curbing your winter screentime doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing thing. Most streaming services have no lock-in contract. You could save by "cycling" through your subscriptions and cancelling one and signing up for another while you binge through particular series a few at a time.
Here are the cheapest plans from some of the main streaming services in Australia.
Other ways to save on streaming could be signing up for services through Optus SubHub if you're already an eligible Optus customers. For example, three or more services bundled through SubHub get you 10% off your bill.
Those who use Hubbl can use the "stack and save" offer to earn up to $15 credit per month with five eligible services bundled.
Dodo's customer data shows an increase of 17% higher internet usage on winter weekends compared to weekdays. Peak online time based on Dodo's data coming in between 8pm to 10pm during the winter months.
Considering how much time we'll be spending online in these chilly winter months, it's a good idea to compare internet plans and make sure you're getting the best deal.
You might even want to put that handy little saving towards a extra streaming service, we won't judge. Here are the cheapest NBN plans in our database across these speed tiers:
