Who doesn’t love a little bit of healthy competition? Right now Telstra will give you a month of NBN for $1, and Aussie Broadband is undercutting the provider to give you the same thing for free.
Aussie and Telstra are two of the biggest NBN providers around, so to see both of them spruiking these competing offers is a big deal for consumers. Ultimately this means that you can try the two big dogs for just $1 for two months. It’s hard to argue with those prices.
If you’re wondering which one to toss (or not toss) your coin to, here is how the pair compare.
Speed
Both telcos have zippy speeds across all speed tiers, in fact these are two of the fastest available for fixed line NBN across the country. Aussie customers will get 1-2Mbps slower typical evening speeds than Telstra customers on plans up to NBN 250, but Telstra pulls out in front when it gets to NBN 1000.
At the moment Telstra has the fastest typical evening speeds on NBN 1000 plans, blowing Aussie out of the water by a whopping 100Mbps. You can toggle speed tiers in the table above by clicking on the dropdown menu to compare.
Price
For the most part Aussie comes in around $10 cheaper than Telstra on comparable plans, and Aussie has more options than Big T does. While both providers have the standard speed tiers from NBN 25 through to NBN 1000, Aussie offers a Build Your Own Plan option where you can pick bespoke speeds and data limits in order to save money on your bill.
It is worth noting that Aussie still offers NBN 100 plans with a 40Mbps upload maximum speed where Telstra uses 100/20 plans. NBN 100 plans with a 20Mbps upload speed became popular in 2020 and all but dominate the speed tier now. Sure they are a bit cheaper than the original speed tier, but working from home you might miss those extra uploads. Great timing hey?
Contracts and hidden fees
Neither provider has contracted NBN plans anymore so you are free to leave at any time, for any reason. Telstra's plans may technically be contract-free but they do come with a modem which is free if you stay with the provider for 24 months. Otherwise if you leave early you’ll need to pay out the cost of the modem which is equal to $9 per month remaining in the 24 month term.
Aussie on the other hand allows you to bring your own modem, or if you choose to buy through the provider you’ll pay the fee outright.
The fine print on these deals
All good things come with small print, but it isn’t as convoluted as you might think. Both providers offer plans on a contract-free basis so you can leave whenever you want, even if it is after your heavily discounted month. With Aussie you can bring your own modem but with Telstra they will send you out a Telstra Smart Modem.
If you stay connected with Telstra for 24 months the modem is free, but if you leave beforehand you’ll need to pay out the prorated cost of the device up to $252. However, this doesn’t mean that you need to pay $252 + $1 to get this deal, thanks to the provider’s 30-day satisfaction guarantee. In the case that Telstra’s NBN plan underwhelms you in the first month you can return the modem, and cancel the service without penalty.
Aussie is offering a free month on every one of its plans if you use code FASTMONTH upon sign up. Telstra’s deal on the other hand is only available on NBN 50 and NBN 100 plans.
After your first month is up both providers' prices revert back to the advertised amount.
