Australians connecting to the NBN via satellite are now able to sign up to a new plan type with unlimited data and speeds as fast as 100Mbps.
Dubbed Sky Muster Plus Premium, the new plan tier is a big step up over the technology type's previous limitations. Until now, the fastest satellite NBN plans had a 25Mbps speed cap with the ability to burst a little faster. Existing Sky Muster Plus plans are largely unmetered, but still have a data allowance for select activities, like video streaming.
The move to unlimited data puts Sky Muster plans in line with other NBN plans. A fair use policy does still apply, however, and NBN Co says it may still cap speeds for certain kinds of traffic - such as large game downloads - during busy periods to prevent congestion.
Satellite NBN providers including Activ8, ANT, Clear, Ipstar, SkyMesh and Southern Phone will be able to start offering the plan from today. Sky Muster Plus Premium places have been priced at around $99 per month across the board.
Sky Muster Plus Premium plans give satellite NBN users an option that's roughly equivalent to what's offered by Starlink. Starlink plans also have unlimited data, and speed guidance of 20Mbps to 100Mbps, but are more expensive at $139 per month.
Looking further forward, NBN Co's planned upgrades to the fixed wireless network will allow approximately 120,000 satellite customers to switch technology types due to an expanded footprint. This will also free up extra capacity for customers still using satellite. These enhancements are expected to be in place by the end of 2024.
