Internet providers including Tangerine, More, AGL, and Southern Phone have stopped selling plans on the new NBN 2000 speed tier following their launch in September. Also known as Hyperfast, the plans allow download speeds of up to 2Gbps.
A Tangerine spokesperson told WhistleOut its removal of its NBN 2000 plan is temporary.
"Tangerine has temporarily paused offering the 2Gbps NBN plan while we refine our processes to make them as smooth and seamless as possible," said the spokesperson.
WhistleOut understands AGL stopped selling its NBN 2000 plan as part of a product simplification.
An NBN Co spokesperson told WhistleOut it has a "strong interest" in NBN 2000 plans, with over 11,000 orders made since launch. The spokesperson also confirmed that there has been no issue with NBN Co supplying the speed tier to providers.
Aussie Broadband and Superloop are currently the only two major providers selling NBN 2000 plans, but there are a handful of smaller options, including Launtel, Leaptel, and Quokka Net.
Superloop’s Group Executive for Consumer, Mehul Dave, told WhistleOut the company has "almost 30% market share" for NBN 2000.
"We know that the 2Gbps plan isn’t for everyone – not everyone needs or is appropriately set up to capitalise on those kinds of speeds, but for customers who do need max speeds, we’re proud and happy to be able to deliver it to them," said Dave.
While NBN 2000 plans are the fastest consumer internet available in Australia, taking advantage of the speeds can be difficult. On the hardware front, customers ideally need a WiFi 7 router with a 2Gbps WAN port or faster. For the fastest wireless possible speeds, a tri-band WiFi 7 router like an eero Pro 7 is ideal.
Even with a fast WiFi 7 router, not all devices will be able to achieve 2Gbps speeds themselves. WiFi 6 and WiFi 7 devices may be able to do so in some situations, but not all of the time. Many wired devices - such as video game consoles - will be limited by the speed of their ethernet port. Both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X only have a 1Gbps ethernet port, for example
