If you've been thinking about trying out a home wireless plan, now might be the time. Until September 30, Optus is offering customers the chance to get their first three months of its 500GB home wireless plan for free. The plan usually costs $85 per month.
For those not familiar, home wireless broadband is a relatively new type of internet plan designed to get your house online using the same networks as your smartphone. If you're unhappy with the quality of your ADSL or NBN connection, wireless internet could be the solution, provided you're able to get a decent mobile signal at home.
This plan from Optus comes with a modem capable of connecting up to 64 devices. And while many competitor home wireless plans cap speeds at 12Mbps (equivalent to the slowest NBN speed tier), the Optus plan comes with no speed cap.
Real-world conditions like signal strength and network congestion may affect the speeds you can achieve at your home, but during our testing we found speeds between 20Mbps and 50Mbps were typical. For reference, 50Mbps is equivalent to the second-fastest NBN speed tier.
Optus' home wireless plan with 500GB is offered on a 24-month contract. However, Optus says that if you do want to leave early, you'll only need to pay out the remaining value of your modem.
The three month free promotion is also being offered on this plan coupled with a pocket WiFi modem, if you prefer a connection that it's a bit more portable.
