NBN Co has announced that it is now working on the last stage of the FTTN upgrade program, which will see all remaining FTTN connections eligible for a free tech type change by the end of 2030.
This wave of upgrades was first announced in January, and will see more than 95% of remaining FTTN connections able to swap to FTTP for free. FTTP is widely considered to be the best NBN technology type thanks to faster speeds and increased reliability.
NBN Co says the remaining 5% "require further design work to confirm the appropriate upgrade path". Some of these may be given the option to upgrade to "next-generation technologies" instead of FTTP.
Work is already underway for facilitating upgrades for more than 228,000 of the eligible homes and businesses out of the total 622,000 remaining on FTTN.
These upgrades sit on top of the initial upgrade program, which will see over 3.5 million FTTN addresses able to swap to FTTP by the end of the year. There are also around a million FTTC addresses eligible for free FTTN upgrades.
All upgrades delivered through the program are free of charge. To qualify for an upgrade, a customer simply needs to order an NBN 100 plan or faster from a participating provider. Read more about the process of requesting a free FTTP upgrade here.
While FTTP allows better speeds than FTTN, it will soon become better value too, thanks to the September NBN upgrades. This will see 100Mbps plans accelerated to 500Mbps for customers on FTTP and HFC connections. Wholesale pricing won't change, and we expect many providers will sell NBN 500 plans for the same price as NBN 100 plans.
