NBN Co today announced that the first slew of suburbs in the free FTTP upgrade scheme can place orders for faster speeds by the end of March.
A range of areas with Fibre to the Node (FTTN) connections across Australia have been earmarked to receive free upgrades to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP), as part of the NBN Network Investment Plan. The goal of this plan is to make download speeds of up to 1Gbps available to 75% of fixed line connections in Australia.
Currently, only FTTP connections, and 95% of Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) connections can achieve NBN 1000 speeds. But according to the Plan, these upgrades should be rolled out to all the eligible suburbs by 2023, with the first of the areas will be able to trigger these upgrades by late March this year.
The areas in question are all connected to FTTN, which is widely considered the worst NBN technology type. A house or business needs to be within 400 meters of the local Node in order to have a chance of achieving NBN 100 speeds. Upgrading these FTTN premises to FTTP will list the maximum download speeds from 50-100Mbps up to 1,000Mbps - the fastest NBN speed tier available.
Even though the work is already being done, in order to trigger the upgrade you’ll need to order a plan faster than its current capabilities. For most FTTN connection types that is an NBN 100, NBN 250, or NBN 1000 plan.
For now, NBN Co hasn’t released the actual list of suburbs that will be eligible during this first round of upgrade, but you can check if yours is included on the list. For more in depth notifications, you can opt in for updates on the NBN website.
