Guy excited at computer

Aussie Broadband has rejigged its range of NBN plans in the lead-up to the new year, introducing a new cheaper NBN 100 / 20 plan. Priced at $89 per month with unlimited data, Aussie Broadband's NBN 100 / 20 plan represents a $10 saving on the provider's NBN 100 / 40 plan, which is still available.

Most NBN 100 plans (also known as Premium evening speed plans) are NBN 100 / 40 plans. These have upload speeds of 40Mbps. The new breed of NBN plans - NBN 100 / 20 - have a slower maximum upload speed of 20Mbps. Both plans still have a maximum download speed of 100Mbps.

Download speed refers to how quickly you're able to get files from the internet, while upload speed relates to how fast you're able to send files to other places online. For example, upload speeds determine how long it will take to send an email with a large attachment, back up your photos to Google Drive, or plonk a big document on Dropbox.

Upload speeds can also affect video calls, Voice over IP, and gaming, as these activities all involve sending and receiving data.

If you don't need unlimited data, you can drop down to a 500GB plan for $85 or $95 per month, depending on whether you'd prefer NBN 100 / 20 or NBN 100 / 40 speeds.

Here's Aussie Broadband's current core plan range:

If you're an existing Aussie Broadband customer, you won't be affected by these changes unless you alter your plan.

In addition, Aussie Broadband has cut the price of its NBN 250 plan to $169 per month, down from $250 per month. However, this plan has also seen a reduction in upload speed. It previously offered upload speeds of up to 100Mbps, but you'll only get up to 25Mbps now. Of course, only between 31% - 54% of Australian premises have NBN connections that are physically capable of achieving speeds of 250Mbps.

Aussie Broadband is also reintroducing NBN 12 plans starting at $40 per month, and expects to offer a 1Gbps plan in May next year.

Aussie Broadband is one of the first telcos to introduce an NBN 100 / 20 plan, following a recent NBN Co wholesale pricing overhaul announcement. Superloop is also now selling NBN 100 / 20 plans.
