Apple isn't always known for playing well with others, but as of today, Amazon Echo owners in Australia and New Zealand can access Apple Music through their smart speakers.
If you've got an Apple Music subscription and an appropriate Alexa-powered device (at this stage, any Echo or a Sonos One), you'll be able to ask Amazon's AI to play songs, albums, playlists and more. To do so, you'll need to enable Apple Music and link your account. You can do this through the Skills Store in the Alexa app or via the Amazon website.
To utilise the skill, you'll use commands like, "Alexa, play Bongzilla on Apple Music".
An Apple Music subscription is required.
While Apple typically restricts its software and services to its own hardware, it has been a bit more liberal with Apple Music. Shortly after it launched on iOS, Apple Music was also made available for Android.
Music tends to be the predominant use case for smart speakers, so bringing Apple Music to Echo makes a lot of sense from Apple's perspective. As more and more households buy into smart speakers, Apple would have run the risk of losing Apple Music subscribers to services compatible with devices like Echo.
