The ACCC has released its 32nd Measuring Broadband Australia report, ranking Optus the fastest NBN provider for the second time in a row.
While Optus has gone in and out of top spot over the course of the years the ACCC has been publishing the report, the big surprise is sibling telcos Dodo and iPrimus in equal second. The pair of providers has typically sat toward the lower end of the report; for example, last quarter, they were in equal seventh.
The latest report found Optus customers received 102.3% of their NBN plan's maximum speeds during the busiest hours of the day (between 7pm and 11pm on Monday to Friday). Dodo and iPrimus followed, with customers found to get 101.5% of plan speeds in busy hours. TPG was a hair behind in third, with 101.4% of plan speeds in busy hours.
When unperforming connections are excluded, Exetel was found to have the fastest "overall" performance.
The report monitors 10 telcos, including Aussie Broadband, Dodo, Exetel, iiNet, iPrimus, Leaptel, Optus, Telstra, TPG, and Superloop.
Here's the full breakdown of how they all performed:
| Provider | Busy hours | Overall | Overall excluding underperforming connections |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aussie Broadband | 94.2 | 94.8 | 100.6 |
| Dodo | 101.5 | 102 | 104.2 |
| Exetel | 100.3 | 101.2 | 106.1 |
| iiNet | 99.3 | 99.8 | 103.1 |
| iPrimus | 101.5 | 102 | 104.2 |

| TPG | 101.4 | 102 | 103.1 |
Compare NBN 50, NBN 100, NBN 500, and NBN 1000 plans from the providers in this report:
The new report is the second to have come out following the NBN speed upgrades in September. While past reports only considered speeds up to NBN 100, NBN 500 and NBN 750 are factored into rankings as of last quarter.
The report found, on average, Australians are getting 98.5% of the NBN speeds their plan promises during busy hours, but this itself is a step back from previous reports. Last quarter, this figure was 100%.
The Measuring Broadband Report also includes Fixed Wireless NBN plans and Starlink plans. The average busy hour download speed for Fixed Wireless Plus plans rose slightly from last quarter. They increased from 96.2Mbps to 98.8Mbps. Meanwhile, Starlink customers achieved an average of 197.3Mbps during busy hours, which is an ever-so-slight increase from 197.2Mbps last quarter.
As always, it's worth remembering the scale of the ACCC's testing. The results come from a month-long testing period during December last year across 1,148 NBN connections. All but 192 of these households have a connection with one of the 10 providers featured in the report. The ACCC reports a 95% confidence level in its results.
