There were three main providers competing for the top spots in February, and they’re back at it again in March. Tangerine’s XL Speed Boost Unlimited plan is our number-one pick for the average home seeking a competitively priced NBN 50 plan. In terms of alternatives, SpinTel’s NBN Unlimited Plus Plan has faster typical evening download speeds, while Superloop’s nbn® Home Standard plan competes around the same price point. That trend of six months of promotional pricing continues with the best unlimited NBN 100 plans. SpinTel’s NBN Unlimited Premium plan holds onto the top spot again in March with a mix of great pricing and equally great typical evening download speeds. That leaves Tangerine’s XXL Speed Boost Unlimited and Superloop’s nbn® Home Fast plans as competitively priced NBN Fast contenders.
How we choose the best nbn® plans for March
Faster broadband typically leads to more data usage, which is why we don’t believe in recommending plans with data caps, so you’ll only find unlimited-data plans. We have separated them into two categories, though: the best NBN 50 plans for the average home and the best NBN 100 plans for the home craves faster speeds.
While you can save money by opting for an NBN 12 or NBN 25 plan, they’re not as great at keeping up with the download and streaming needs of 21st century work and play. Similarly, while there are NBN 250 and NBN 1000 plans on the market, they’re only available to certain NBN technologies, which is why we stick with the more ubiquitous NBN 100 plans for our fast broadband category. Our NBN 100 recommendations are also the cheaper 100/20 plans instead of the pricier (and rarer) 100/40 variants.
The other main consideration is each provider’s self-reported typical evening download speeds, which can help separate a contender from a winner. For homes seeking a great value NBN 50 connection, the Tangerine XL Speed Boost Unlimited plan is back for its second consecutive win, thanks in part to improved promotional pricing. Tangerine has had a long-running $10 discount on this plan, but that was stretched to a $15 monthly saving for the first six months, and this approach continues in March.
Instead of paying $69.90 for 42Mbps typical evening download speeds, you’ll pay $54.90 for the first six months ($748.80 first-year cost). All Tangerine NBN plans also come with a 14-day zero-risk trial period, as well as the flexibility to add a home phone service and preconfigured modem-router.
For a slightly cheaper, slightly faster alternative, consider the SpinTel NBN Unlimited Plus plan. Normally priced at $64.95 a month, the first six months are priced at $59 apiece as part of a WhistleOut Exclusive deal, which equates to a $743.70 first-year cost for typical evening download speeds of 45Mbps.
