TPG and iiNet are both pretty similar NBN providers, so similar in fact that it is difficult to wonder which one is a better fit. Realistically there isn't too much that seperates the pair; prices, speeds, and customer service are all close enough to call it a draw. So if you're looking for the differentiating factors, we've outlined them below.
TPG vs. iiNet: NBN plans at a glance
TPG vs. iiNet: Owners
Both iiNet and TPG are owned by TPG Telecom.
TPG vs. iiNet: Typical evening speeds
Typical evening speeds refer to the download speeds you can expect during peak usage times on the NBN. The more people using the network, the less capacity is available which results in lower speeds.
Think of the NBN as a road. The more people on the the road, the slower you’re going to go. The only way to fix the problem is to either widen the road or for less people to use it.
NBN providers can achieve better speeds for customers by buying more Connectivity Virtual Circuit (CVC), which for the sake of this analogy, widens the road by adding more bandwidth on the network. The more CVC a provider reserves, the faster the speeds they are able to guarantee for their customers. Providers with higher typical evening speeds generally have more CVC.
Here are how TPG and iiNet compare in terms of typical NBN evening speeds.
| NBN 12 | NBN 25 | NBN 50 | NBN 100 | NBN 250 | NBN 1000 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| TPG | 12Mbps | 25Mbps | 50Mbps | 90Mbps | 200Mbps | 250Mbps |
| iiNet | 12Mbps | 25Mbps | 50Mbps | 90Mbps | 200Mbps | 200Mbps |
For comparison, here are the 10 fastest providers on NBN 100 plans.
TPG vs. iiNet: Data limits
Both TPG and iiNet offer tiered data limits on low speed NBN plans, but when you get up to NBN 25 and above the plans shift to unlimited.
TPG customers can opt for an NBN 12 plan with 100GB while iiNet offers NBN 12 with 500GB instead. After that, all plans from both providers jump to unlimited.
TPG vs. iiNet: Contracts
TPG
TPG NBN plans have three options; no contract and BYO modem, no contract and paying a set up fee, or a six-month contract with modem and no setup fee.
If you’ve already got your own modem you can sign up to any TPG plan and pay month to month, but if you’d rather buy an included modem you have that option too. To go contract-free and get a modem you’ll pay a $99.95 set up fee, if you opt for a six-month contract TPG will waive the set up fee.
iiNet
iiNet has similar contract options to TPG, which is unsurprising considering that they are offshoots of the same parent company.
You’ve got the option to sign up to a six-month contract, or to go contract-free. If you are bringing your own modem then opting for a contract won’t get you any extra discounts. On the other hand, if you are planning to buy a modem from iiNet, you’ll pay $99.95 on a no-contract term, or $59.95 on a six-month contract. Either way, you’ll also be liable for a $10 postage fee.
TPG vs. iiNet: Customer service
Judging customer service is difficult between providers. For every customer with a great experience, there will be another with a terrible one. Instead let's take a look at how many avenues customers have in order to query the provider. The more channels a provider invests in customer service is a fair indication of how much that telco values the customer experience.
TPG vs. iiNet: Support Options Compared
| Provider | In-store | Call | Chat | Social | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| iiNet | - | ||||
| TPG | - |
TPG and iiNet are entirely on par with each other for customer service options. You’ll have the option to reach out to either provider through a live chat, social media, over the phone or through a contact form or email address.
TPG vs. iiNet: Extras
TPG and iiNet can be put in the ‘no frills’ category. You’ll pay reasonably for the service you’re getting and won’t get much extra on top of that.
There are a couple of perks, however - iiNet offers optional Fetch TV with its plans for an extra nominal fee. You can also get a 120GB SIM-only plan with the provider for just $29.99 per month when you bundle it together with your NBN plan. This plan is exclusive for iiNet NBN customers, otherwise, the same plan would get you 40GB per month. iiNet operates on the Vodafone mobile network.
Here are iiNet’s mobile plans.
TPG also offers bundled discounts, taking as much as $10 off almost every SIM-only plan with the provider when packaged with an NBN plan. TPG also operates on the Vodafone network.
