There are literally hundreds of NBN providers out there, all selling access to the same network but of course there are some that are far more popular than others. We’re not saying that popularity is everything, but if a whole bunch of people like them there must be a reason right!?
Here we outline the top 5 most popular NBN providers according to our data over the past 12 months. This means these five ISPs have had the most clicks, and the most people have cared enough to take a look at them. Below we outline what you need to know about these providers and some of their best NBN deals available right now.
Tangerine Telecom may be a relative unknown in the wider world of internet plans, but it has been the most popular provider over the past 12 months here on WhistleOut.
Almost every single one of Tangerine's NBN plans come with some sort of timed discount. For the first six months you'll get a heavily discounted rate, which will revert back once the promo period ends.
All of these plans are contract-free, so if you're not a fan you can switch providers at any time - but even better yet, Tangerine have a 14-day Satisfaction Guarantee. If within the first fortnight you're unhappy you can have your plan fees refunded and shuffle on without penalty.

SpinTel plans are known for their value and flexibility. Rather than choose a plan off-the-shelf, as it were, with SpinTel you can build your plan from scratch, by choosing your plan speed, data, contract terms, and whether you want a home phone.
Not only that, but the provider offers some of the most competitive monthly rates without any discounts. That is not to say that SpinTel doesn't do discounts, they most certainly do! But the switch from the promo pricing to the regular price is far less jarring.
Most SpinTel plans are entirely contract-free, but you can opt for a six-month contract if you're bundling in a phone service with your plan. This will get you a $69 credit added to your first bill.

Telstra is still Australia's biggest telco, and while it isn't the best option for more budget-conscious consumers, this NBN provider is a good choice if you're after quality, reliability, speed, and extras.
Telstra reports some of the fastest typical evening speeds around, and all plans are contract-free which means you can leave at any time without penalty, you just have to pay out any remaining value on your modem.
Telstra plans all come with a smart modem offering 4G backup in case the NBN goes down. And if you want entertainment with your plan, you can bundle in a Telstra TV 3 set-top box and/or Foxtel.
Telstra also offers NBN 250 (Superfast) and NBN 1000 (Ultrafast) plans.
Belong offers an unusual mix of speed options for NBN customers. Every plan has a hard cap: 30Mbps, 40Mbps, or 80Mbps. Even though the plans may be capable of going faster, you'll never achieve faster than these speeds - even outside of busy hours.
Belong plans come with the option of a 12-month contract, but you can also go contract-free. This will cost you an extra $5 per month, and you'll need to pay $60 upfront for a WiFi modem. This modem is included if you commit to a year-long term.

Aussie Broadband has made a name for itself as an NBN provider thanks to a combination of consistently high evening speeds and local support. The telco says its customers rarely encounter congestion during peak times, and to prove it, publishes bandwidth graphs that show how much capacity it has purchased on the network versus how much capacity its customers are using. To date, Aussie Broadband is one of the only major telcos to provide this much transparency around NBN bandwidth and performance.
The company's plans are completely customisable: you can pick from a range of options for data inclusions, NBN speed tiers, and adding phone calls. And on top of the standard NBN speed tiers, Aussie Broadband is also one of the few providers that goes beyond NBN 100. If you're lucky enough to have a FTTP NBN connection, Aussie can sell you NBN 250 (Superfast) or even NBN 1000 (Ultrafast) speeds.
