How we judge this award

Households wanting more headroom than a standard connection are the audience for this award, which centres on NBN 100 plans suited to several people streaming, gaming or working online at once.

Cost is assessed as a running total across a full 12 month period rather than a single advertised monthly rate, capturing the effect of promotional pricing or extra fees that a single month's bill might otherwise hide.

Inclusions are checked against a fixed list of nine possible extras, each contributing one point: a bundled home phone service, positive network satisfaction findings, a modem supplied with no cancellation penalty, a bundle discount, support based in Australia, 24/7 technical support, a complimentary speed boost, streaming or subscription perks, and any other bonus inclusion, with a bundled modem, streaming perks and a free speed boost carrying particular relevance at this tier since they add real value on top of a faster connection. Speed is judged using independently measured typical evening figures rather than the maximum advertised figure, since this tier is chosen specifically to handle heavier, more simultaneous use and any shortfall from the advertised maximum matters directly to a customer's experience.

Customer support is scored against eight distinct service channels: a physical store presence, phone support, live chat, email or message based support, an active and responsive social media or forum presence, round the clock support availability, weekend support hours, and self service account management online, one point awarded per channel a provider makes available. Customer sentiment, drawn from ratings and reviews submitted by verified customers of the plan and its provider, supplies the fifth measure. The five results are combined to produce the Ranking that decides the winner.
