How we judge this award

This award recognises the top performer among NBN 50 connections, the speed tier most households choose for everyday use such as browsing, HD streaming and running a handful of connected devices at once. Judging combines five separate measures rather than a single headline figure, so no one factor can carry a result on its own.

Cost is assessed as a running total across a full 12 month period rather than a single advertised monthly rate, since promotional credits, temporary discounts or scheduled price rises after an introductory period can otherwise mask what a plan really costs a household over time. Inclusions are checked against a fixed list of nine possible extras, each contributing one point toward a provider's total: a bundled home phone service, positive network satisfaction findings, a modem supplied with no cancellation penalty, a bundle discount, support based in Australia, 24/7 technical support, a complimentary speed boost, streaming or subscription perks, and any other bonus inclusion.

At the NBN 50 tier specifically, a no-penalty modem and a free speed boost tend to matter most to the outcome, since either can meaningfully lower the ongoing cost or lift day to day usability of what is otherwise a standard connection.

Speed is judged using independently measured typical evening figures rather than the maximum figure advertised on a plan, since evening is when home networks face their heaviest simultaneous demand and therefore reveal the truest picture of everyday performance.

Customer support is scored against eight distinct service channels: a physical store presence, phone support, live chat, email or message based support, an active and responsive social media or forum presence, round the clock support availability, weekend support hours, and self service account management online, with one point awarded for each channel a provider makes available. The fifth and final measure draws on customer sentiment, using ratings and reviews submitted directly by verified customers of the plan and its provider. The five results are combined to produce the Ranking that decides the winner, and no single measure is weighted heavily enough to determine the outcome on its own.
