Alex Angove-Plumb is a Digital Content Editor at WhistleOut and an award-winning journalist. He's been in the tech publishing industry since 2010, putting him a few short years away from the title of Grizzled Ancient in his chosen profession. He was an original WhistleOut-er before running NBN Co's corporate blog for two years, then moving on to a lengthy stint at CHOICE. Now he's come home.
Over his career, Alex has learned more about phones, telcos, and the NBN than he'd like to admit, and is happy to put his expertise to good use by helping our readers navigate the often-confusing morass of buzzwords and gotchas that tech marketing can throw your way.
When not shaking his fist at kids these days, you might find Alex tinkering about the house doing arguably destructive DIY, messing with one or both of his cats, or trying just-one-more-run in whatever roguelite he's currently obsessed with.
We’ve been talking a bit recently on the influx of new manufacturers entering the mobile market via tablets and how this could be exactly what was needed to shake things up a bit. While it’s true that Toshiba has released a couple of its own tablets in previous generations, we’d still consider them one of the less-traditional OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) when it comes to mobile devices.
Continuing on with its slow-but-steady 4G adoption, Telstra has announced a new 4G mobile hotspot device. The new gadget receives 4G Telstra speeds in LTE enabled areas and can push that super-fast mobile broadband connection out to a maximum of 5 devices with WiFi capabilities.
The Samsung Galaxy Nexus has the honour of being the first Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) device available on the market. As a collaboration between Google and Samsung, the Galaxy Nexus both looks and functions a bit differently than other Samsung-manufactured smartphones we've seen in the past. We took it for a spin to check out its new operating system (OS), as well as wether or not the Galaxy Nexus is worthy of the Android flagship throne.
It looks like our hopes of Apple learning from past mistakes will be shattered. Reports are coming in that the iPad 3 will see severe supply shortages that may persist in to Q2 of this year. At the same time we’re hearing that the next Apple tablet may even not be called the iPad 3 at all, but rather the iPad HD.
From today Telstra is offering pre-paid 4G LTE deals on both its new Samsung Galaxy 8.9 4G tablet and on 4G LTE Telstra USB modems. We’ve already touched on the Tablet side of things in our last post, so head on over to that if you want to check it out. For those who’re interested in a pre-paid 4G USB modem stick around.
The HTC Rhyme is a mid-range Android 2.3 Gingerbread device with which HTC has taken a slightly different approach when it comes to aesthetics and accessories. The HTC Rhyme also comes standard with its own unique charging dock, which allows the phone to operate as a bedside clock with integrated web, weather and notifications. We grabbed a hold of one and took it for a spin to see how the Rhyme compared to other devices in the same field in our HTC Rhyme review.
The HTC Sensation XL is definitely at the larger end of the current smartphone spectrum, weighing in with a large 4.7 inch display. Being a variant of the HTC Sensation, it’s also one of HTC’s highest-end phones. So can this 4.7 inch beast compete in the big leagues? We took it for a spin to find out just exactly that for our HTC Sensation XL review.
The Motorola DEFY line of smartphones has been one of Moto’s more popular enterprises in recent years. DEFY handsets are functional, relatively cheap and extremely resilient. Many consumers have been attracted to the idea of a phone that is water, impact, dust and temperature resistant, as it seems that all too many smartphones end up in the repair shop these days from just minor bumps and bruises.
The HTC Sensation XE is one of HTC’s current leading devices, offering a similar yet enhanced experience than the original HTC Sensation. Some of the differences between the two devices are obvious due to the very nature of the XE, such as Beats Audio integration or its faster processor, and some are less obvious, even unexpected.
The iPhone 4S, as part of the iconic iPhone line, is obviously doing very well for itself in the market. However, directly after its release there was a lot of discontentment demonstrated throughout the online community. While the negative reactions were initially more abundant that one might expect for an Apple product, things seem to be quieting down a bit now as people come to terms with the fact that there isn’t going to be any iPhone 5 this time around.
